L33 engine would probably be the cheapest route if you can find one. All aluminum 5.3 put in trucks/SUV's.

That's kind of where I'm at right now, I have two complete engines, with a hundred bucks into both of them. So I want to see what's possible without getting too crazy. That's why my original plan is to put forged rods and Pistons in it, ARP hardware, LS1 intake for hood clearance, a forced induction cam, and see what happens. If it works awesome, if not, then I will start looking into possibly going crazy with the other 5.3 I have, or getting a 6.0 with good heads and intake. This first try will be a junkyard 5.3 with a couple fancy parts in it.

Has an L92 already been mentioned? Aluminum block, relatively common... Close friend has one in a c4 Z06 - his is a striker motor but I have to imagine they are relatively affordable to modify and they are light.

Edit - I think it's just the bigger VVT version of the L33 - a 6.2L aluminum block miata on a budget would be pretty impressive though.

Sounds like a pretty solid plan.

I'd read up on iron block ring gap on high boost. I guess it's common for them to eat the walls at the stock clearances at high boost. I may be entirely wrong, but I'm sure I remember reading something along those lines.

A l33 isn't a good boost candidate. They are expensive because they are rarer and lighter, they generally have the best stock 5.3 heads, and they run higher compression ratios compared to the iron 5.3. They can't be bored far for the same reason as the LS1. You can get a 6.0 for the price of one of those L33's AFAIK.

The only problem with a whole L92 is the VVT, the cylinder deactivation, and the cost. They are complicated and a bit harder to run. Those heads are basically production-level LS7 heads though, they work great on any block with a big enough bore.

The LT1 is better than the 90's 5.0, but not by much

Ryan, you're right -- no iron block V8's in F-bodies after 1998+. The only LS engines with iron blocks were the ones in the pickup trucks. Those are the blocks that guys use for big boost builds.

I think you're on the right track. Iron block for durability. The 5.3 is plenty of displacement. Decent heads, cam and intake, good sized turbo, you're ready for 1000whp.

God damn that is brutal, so close to 1000 lol. Now when they are saying stock 5.3, does that mean stock bottom end, obviously they've got a different intake manifold on it, but are they stock heads as well?

It gives the mod list at the first of the video. Stock junkyard bottom end, 799 heads, 224R cam and Edelbrock Vic Jr. intake.

Oops, I looked right past that. Well then, I will basically copy that build, bump the compression up a little with forged pistons, add studs, forged rods and call it a day. Thank you for posting that!

**edit** Unfortunately that intake would never clear the hood without going to a cowl induction style hood

Time for more questions, I want to put the radiator like this:

Obviously with a better crossflow radiator, real Spal fans, and fully ducted.

I believe the area behind the hardtop is a low pressure area, so it's not exactly going to get a lot of airflow naturally. So the fans will most likely be on all the time.

I am pretty set on doing it this way with it exhausting through the trunk and under the bumper. Is there any way to make the area behind the hardtop a high pressure area? I heard someone say if I take the glass out of the hardtop it would do that?

Thoughts?

Yes I have, but his is set up with it pulling from the bottom and exhausting through the deck lid.

Right. Which is why I asked Seems his setup works well. I'm doubtful there would be enough airflow with just the fans pushing the air.

I'm hoping in will chime in and say if it worked well or not. I remember reading him saying if it didn't work well he would have to add some ducting to the bottom of the car.

Thanks man, some pictures. Not much going on with it. I hope to have the mock up block in the car this weekend and can begin planning turbo placement.

Alright... not that anyone cares about this car anymore :'( lol I will make a post regardless! So here is where I sit with the car now, and some more of the most recent pictures.

So far;
-The mock up engine is in.
-I have been working on the rollcage as well as bringing the bars through the firewall to the front frame horns.
-Turbo is placed where I want it.
-Front shock towers have been braced.

Whats in the near future;
-transmission has been bought, I need to purchase a SFI rated bellhousing then I will get that in the car and start making the mounts for it.
-Headers, cross over pipe, downpipe, EWG piping... I am waiting on all this until I have the transmission mounted and the engine is for sure at its final position.

This is my first time doing any type of work like this in regards to chassis reinforcement and rollcage building. But I am very confident in my welding abilities and so far I have been more than pleased with how everything is coming along.

I honestly cant wait to get started on building the exhaust, I have been doing alot more stainless steel fab stuff at work and I feel like my welds are getting better and better everyday. Target for completion is early next year.

If anyone has in questions, input, criticism please chime in!

How are you going to plumb the oil feel/drain to the turbo? Are you going to use a pump for it since gravity drain doesn't seem ideal?

Hot damn. I've been waiting for updates for a while on this! The gauges are freaking awesome.

Pretty excited to see this get up and running.

You are correct, just a simple scavenging pump to pump it back to the oil pan.

Thanks! I am really happy with now the dash came out. I originally had the font under my RPM logo, but it was too intricate for the engraver to handle, so it was left out. I've been trying to make more progress and get to the point of getting them mounted in the car. But work and everything else has slowed me down.

Hopefully it will go faster than 200 Vlad lol are you ready for it?
