After half a decade it has happened, the motor is in the car! Now I just need all the inter-cooler piping, driveshaft, PPF, interior wiring, hoses, a radiator and a few other things. The Fabworks mounts did let motor slide in like butter, recommend.

Build is approaching 5 years and now it has a rear. MSM rear with 3:63 gear and poly mounts. Also a mountain of welding to attach the K Miata reinforcement bracket to the arm that breaks. Hope it holds.

I thought this was a slow msm build... But it's actually a slow build of a msm. Like I thought the car was gonna be slow, not the actual build.
BUT you definitely win "slowest" build. Looks good though, get this damn thing finished! |
Why did you by the bolt on brackets and weld them? I'm pretty sure Mazda Motorsports sells a well on plate set for cheaper than what the K-Miata ones sell for.

The slow build crawls along. Thanks MKTurbo (shuiend) for making up some sweet intercooler pipes!

Progress is moving slowly. Hey only been 6 years. There a prize for slowest build?
Little cutting and moving of the Inter cooler.....it fits nice and so much room for activities. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...45f8405038.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...55f793cb82.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1a2db3f85c.jpg |
We now have a final mount of the Radiator and it plays nice with the condenser. Cool new fans too.

We some more progress, got the exhaust on from turbo to tailpipe yesterday. Also got gas tank cleaned out and ready for fuel. Some wiring and hoses and maybe just maybe 2020 will be its year. Thanks shuiend it fits!

7 years later and I added oil and power steering fluid.......getting close and the next morning the power steering fluid on the ground. You forget what you did not tighten when it was done years ago. But yesterday I turned it over and got oil pressure, that was exciting....than filled up the rear fluid and this morning the rear fluid had leaked onto the floor so thats coming out today. The fight continues! This MSM will run soon!

I got to point of trying to start it this week and it turns over and fuel pump works also the injectors show pulse but I got no spark. So over last few days been trying to figure out the spark issue and I have turned it over several times to test (till I found test section in MS) and today I open oil cap to see how oil was flowing. In amazement I found an APR head stud laying sideways? So I pulled cover and found both front studs broken in the middle and laying on top of the head. Been working on cars for 35 years and never seen this before.
There was no water in the motor so it has not frozen (fresh build). ARP studs were new. Checked and the cyc are not filled with any fluids, water or fuel. Rules out hydro locking. Spark plugs is dry. Thoughts? I'm so disappointed. Here is the short block build. 2004 Mazdaspeed Engine Bored to 1.9L with fully built bottom end. *Boundary Engineering street/strip oil pump with 3 shims *84mm 8.6:1 Supertech Pistons *Wiseco piston rings *Manley forged H-beam connecting rods (further balanced by Abacus) *ARP hardware for rods *ARP head studs *ARP main studs *ACL thrust washer *ACL main bearings Head is stock except upgraded springs and rebuilt. *ACL rod bearings *Gates timing belt kit *Supermiata water https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...64694a2e02.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...795a92f8ec.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...357a2e1d71.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b06902e66a.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ef9c2673e5.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...708823ea7b.jpg pump *Supermiata balancer *OEM oil pan gasket |
What did you torque them to? Are these the normal head studs or high boost ones?

has the head ever been over heated? Hardware fails in an EXTREMELY predictable manor, I'm sure ARP would love to have their hands on those bolts and tell you exactly why they failed. I'd have to look closely at the head and both threaded sections to give you an inaccurate opinion on why they failed.

Well just got off phone with ARP and they have no ideas. I've been told to pull all them and send them in so they can look deeper into the issue. Offered to send me two more. I just bought he HD ones from 949 Racing.

Not currently, any time in its history. They can re-warp, even after surfacing. But that’s a crazy long shot, I’m still thinking arp will find something wrong with the studs.
