SSM car to spoon Leafy with

...hopefully.

Stock/unopened/junkyard VVT engine assploded at the only autocross I did with the car this year, back in August. Something in the bottom end failed spectacularly, though I haven't pulled the engine yet to figure out what it is. I took the timing belt off, and the cams still spin freely, so hopefully the head is fine.

Fast forward a month or so, and an autocross friend mentioned he had an engine sitting in his shop that he just wanted gone...$100 and come get it. It has Carillo rods, Wiseco pistons, and ARP hardware everywhere. I had no idea what this engine had been through, so I wanted it to get looked over before I put it back together. It's currently with Matt Kessler being groomed.

The car:
1996 chassis
NB front subframe, etc
Xidas
15x11's with 275 A7's

Engine plans:
Carillo Rods
Wiseco Pistons
ARP hardware
Boundary oil pump
ATI damper (scored a "blemished" one from their ebay store for mega discount)
MKTurbo kit
Supertech heavy double springs?

Goal:
Hopefully for this coming autocross season, I can make a relatively safe 230whp/230tq as I don't particularly want to swap a 6 speed this year. I'd like to be able to rev it to 8000rpm to get decent speed with the 5sp/4.30 combo (~65mph). The junkyard VVT engine survived 3 years of 7800, so I don't see why this one wouldn't be able to handle 8000. Open to opinions on that.

Other than the engine, I'm building a wing out of carbon fiber, and remaking the splitter since it can be much bigger than the CSP rules allowed.

Pic dump...

First attempt at wing sample. Ignore the fact that I broke it. There's a whole through the center for a rod, that I didn't put in this one. Vacuum cracked it :(

pro tip to beating leafy: don't have your engine bay look like a tub of snakes swimming in diarrhea

concealer404 11-10-2017 12:13 PM

No hentai engine bay? All the winning.

navalhawkeye 11-10-2017 12:23 PM

I'm a wire nazi, so hopefully it will live up to expectations.

Picking up most of the turbo stuff tomorrow from Lars. Progress will be slow as the car lives at my parents house 25 minutes away.

No windshield and a turbo? Sweet.

Picked up the exhaust and majority of other stuff from Lars. Looks quality. Will unpack in the daylight.

navalhawkeye 11-13-2017 12:50 PM

Picked up everything to put ABS in. Booster/master cylinder are from an MSM. Module is from an 03.

The motor that blew up. I just finally got around to taking it out now. Blew up in August...removed on Black Friday.

That has another event or two in it!

navalhawkeye 12-06-2017 11:29 AM

Got the rest of the MK Turbo kit from Lars. Manifold looks awesome. Engine should be ready in week or two (depends when I'm able to pick it up). I think I have everything to put the bottom end together. Need to look at a few part diagrams. Going to try to do as much as I can around the Christmas week since I have it off. If I don't have all the engine parts, I will at least try to build the splitter.

I had the RB muffler before I put the MK kit on. The MK setup has a much nicer, deeper sound.

I don't think you have much to worry about lol...230whp is probably down close to 50% on you, no?

Leafy is local, good people, answered hundreds of my stupid questions, and saved me from myself many other times. Of course he has to be picked on.

navalhawkeye 12-17-2017 05:33 PM

Got the engine back yesterday. Need to take the cylinder head to a local shop to get it cleaned up and decked a little bit. I need to figure out the actual compression ratio first. Matt Kessler believes it will be 8.5:1 if the head is stock height (it's been shaved a tiny bit, but probably negligible). The pistons sit .008" above the deck at TDC, so will need thicker head gasket than stock (probably .045).

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...60efee1200.jpg

navalhawkeye 12-27-2017 02:16 PM

Finally starting to actually do something to the car. Got the intercooler in after a few emails back and forth with Lars. I'm usually really good at figuring things out without directions, but I was all aboard the struggle short bus with that for some reason.

For anyone installing an MK Turbo intercooler, you have to notch the brace for the hood latch a little bit.

Slightly crooked - not exactly sure why. Probably going to stick a washer or two under the bracket on the driver side to fix it. The bumper is all sorts of warped which makes it look worse than it is.

Also in progress, building a new splitter. 1/4" birch plywood that I'm going to wrap in carbon fiber, with a few pieces of foam "bars" embedded in it for added twisting strength. For the rear mounts, I think I'm going to weld a piece of 1/4" steel bar onto the subframe that will act as a hanger. The splitter will have two or three pieces of angle iron with matching notches that will slide onto it. The front braces of the splitter will hold it onto that. Hoping I can get this mostly done by the end of this week.

Leafy 12-27-2017 02:23 PM

Why do you still have a hood latch?

navalhawkeye 12-27-2017 02:46 PM

You've given me enough reasons not to trust myself.

navalhawkeye 01-22-2018 07:42 AM

Progress has been pathetically slow on this because it's been so cold. Got the splitter done, just waiting to get the support rods for the front. It's going to be high 40's this weekend, so going to wrap it in carbon fiber either Saturday or Sunday.

navalhawkeye 01-30-2018 12:12 PM

Splitter looks good enough that I'm happy with it. Need to clean up the edges a bit still. Of course, if I could do it again I could get it near perfect.

Getting the cylinder head back in <2 weeks, so it will finally start going together.

Finally getting somewhere. Drilled and tapped the oil pan. Girlfriend painted it and the valve cover Ford tractor blue. Seemed appropriate. I also have the cylinder head back. Should have most of the engine assembled Saturday. Off next week to get it all close to done. Building at least one element of the wing on Monday.

Finally have the engine almost together. I don't like the way the oil drain line is. I imagine it needs to be re-positioned once it's in the car.

Started building the wing. First element is in the vacuum bag now. Second one will go in tomorrow.

Car side mounts for the wing. Going to do the wing side ones tomorrow.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4611/...8011762b_c.jpg

Question about the wing side ones. Is it safe to just epoxy them (will be steel) to the wing? Will be traditional underside mount.

Giant wang.

Engine goes in tomorrow. Won't be starting it...still need some small things like new heater hoses.

navalhawkeye 03-05-2018 12:57 PM

Engine in. Need to rethink the intercooler piping. There's just no room with the sway bar I have to route it down that way, around the PS pump. Going to go over the radiator. Might do the same with the cold side. Tempted to do EPS like Leafy did, but not sure I have the time/energy/money to do it before the season starts.

Where is vlad to make fun of your nest of snakes in your engine bay?

sonofthehill 03-05-2018 07:17 PM

Oh please, you got nothing on my snakes, I mean um engine bay. ;)

navalhawkeye 03-06-2018 07:28 AM

Nest of snakes will get better as stuff actually gets hooked up.

Going the leafy route, and doing the volvo electric power steering pump. I didn't like any solution I could come up with that would let the intercooler piping work with the sway bar I have, keeping the headlight, and the PS pump. They all sucked pretty equally. Ordered a pump off ebay. Need to order the wiring harness, and figure out all the plumbing.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4752/...b3250e4d_h.jpg

navalhawkeye 03-16-2018 09:30 AM

Did a bunch of wiring on the snow day on Wednesday. No idea why picture quality is garbagio. Not worthy of r/cableporn, but it mostly satisfies my OCD. Ran out of red wire, still need to wire up power steering pump.

Made a bracket for the PS pump:

Well, trying to start it...and not having any luck. Getting some pops and bangs, but nothing really in the way of it wanting to start.

Cranking battery voltage is in the 10's...at somewhere between 215-250rpm. It's been so long since I last ran this thing that I can't remember if that's normal or not.

Things I've noticed:
- Timing light doesn't work while cranking
- Timing light does work in test mode when manually lighting plugs
- Can definitely smell fuel
- Had battery on charger, then switched to jumping it off my truck. Gained some cranking RPM by doing that, but nothing else

Going to stop for today and let the battery charge overnight. Any help would be appreciated!

navalhawkeye 03-24-2018 07:17 PM

God damnit. Forgt attachments were fubar.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzV...w?usp=drivesdk

Hope that link works.

navalhawkeye 03-25-2018 06:14 PM

Bah. Still no luck.

Things I did today:
- Took valve cover off and double checked the cams/crank are timed. Stuck zip tie in hole 1 to make sure that was at TDC, since I can't actually see it on the crank because of the ATI damper. With #1 at TDC, marks on cam shaft are lined up, and the TDC mark on the ATI damper lines up with TDC on the timing cover.
- Was messaging someone on a MS page from facebook. He suggested some stuff. Got it to sputter some more.
- Got a new battery to rule out voltage issues

The gas is from the fall. I feel like it should still be fine, but tempted to drain the tank and refill with new gas.

Here's the current tune and a log of a start attempt.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1pw...CzsfBE--bYBgNe
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Xi...w5a0IyhvAjulls

Sigh.

Leafy 03-25-2018 07:52 PM

You've seen the ATI pulley issues thread right

navalhawkeye 03-25-2018 07:54 PM

Yeah. Mine is supposedly unaffected. Was built sometime in September/October. But...who knows?

tankrust 03-25-2018 09:52 PM

Next time you try to crank it, capture a composite log (Under "Diagnostics and High Speed Loggers") and post it here. Sounds like a possible crank trigger issue since you confirmed the timing is correct.

navalhawkeye 03-26-2018 06:23 AM

Yeah. I was pretty much having nightmares that the trigger wheel is off. I'm pretty sure I have a composite log from the last time the car ran (different engine, but same trigger wheel). Going to compare tonight. Will post.

Fuck. No idea how I'm getting the ATI damper off if it's actually incorrect

navalhawkeye 03-26-2018 07:06 AM

Maybe someone can double check this. I realized this picture has the engine lined up at TDC (you can faintly make out the marks on the damper), and the missing teeth are just advanced of it. That makes sense, right?

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...48d754eb5c.jpg

tankrust 03-26-2018 09:26 AM

Trigger wheel looks backwards. The gap in the teeth should be to the left of the damper dowel pin with everything lined up TDC.

navalhawkeye 03-26-2018 10:16 AM

Yep, almost certain you're right. UGHHHHHHHHHHH.

Wow, I did not know you could bolt on the ATI wheel backwards. The SuperMiata one has it setup so you can only bolt it one way to prevent this.

The trigger wheel is the FM one. Maybe it's different from ATI's design?

18psi 03-26-2018 10:33 AM

Looking in per your PM request but looks like you guys already found one of the problems?
is it a stock tooth count/design trigger wheel?

My only input at this point (having not seen the tune/logs) is that FF's will need much more than req_fuel tweaking to run from a stock injector map. idle cells usually go up at least 10-20%

shuiend 03-26-2018 10:34 AM

Ohh, I honestly don't know much about what trigger wheels work with the ATI damper. But if the wheel is on backwards the would keep your car from running.

navalhawkeye 03-26-2018 10:52 AM

This is the wheel I have: https://www.flyinmiata.com/36-2-tooth-timing-wheel.html

Their instructions: https://www.flyinmiata.com/support/i...ng%20wheel.pdf

shuiend 03-26-2018 10:58 AM

On the second page of the instructions with the lowest picture you can see the missing teeth on the other side. So I bet you have it flipped backwards. That will 100% explain why the car would not start.

Going to stop get a puller on my way home, and then have a blast removing the radiator, and sway bar to get the impact in there. Hope it comes off easier than it went on.

tankrust 03-26-2018 11:17 AM

That would explain why your timing light looks like it isn't working. The timing mark will be way off the side of the scale. You might be able to get away with putting in a huge crank trigger timing offset in TunerStudio since you have a 36-2 wheel. I'm not sure of the max value it will let you put in there, but might be worth a shot since you anticipate much pain in pulling the damper.

I've tried 0-10 in increments, and 80-100 in increments. But, seems like it's probably more like 270...? Or -90? If that would work, I might try that first.
