How much will the 40s cost? Wonder if you could get them off a rusted to death 70s Alfa GTV?

 

There is a vendor who sells a pretty nice setup with manifold, linkage, etc.. which I will most likely go with. The whole setup runs about $1200.

Finally got my speedo cable in. The stock one doesn't work with the 320i 5 speed so I had to get a longer one. Having a speedo really increases the awesomeness of the driving experience. Can't really explain it, but seeing that dead needle was killing it for me.

Also changed the oil.

I just need a new clutch/tob and this car will have 0 drivability issues and I can focus on the interior and body. I'm tapping out and taking it to a shop for the clutch though, I'm just not as motivated to do the big stuff anymore.

 

Okay I need opinions from you homos.

Should I convert to EFI/ITBs or go with dual carbs. I like the efficiency and tune-ability of EFI, but carb is so simple, and from what I've read I won't see a huge difference in power between the two with a stock engine. The EFI is going to run me nearly twice as much money no matter how I do it. And it is quite a bit more complex with wiring and setup.

On that car i'd honestly stick with the carbs. I really like the idea of a good carb setup on a nice old car, and the way they sound and their quirks are awesome.

Althought EFI would be easy to boost down the road, how do these 2.0 take to a bit of FI?

 

I haven't looked too much into boost, as that would be way down the road, and at that point I'd probably just move to a different engine altogether. Although they did make a turbo 2002, not sure if it is the same powerplant though.

I'm really leaning towards the carbs. I'm not one to try and keep things original in a sense, but I do like the idea of carbs on an old BMW, it just feels right. Plus the price is right and installation is cake.

I don't see why either, probably not much HP gain to be had vs a properly tuned performance carb setup. Plus you get to play with carbs, which sounds fun to me at least.

I may be weird, but i feel like on old cars the carbs are a big part of what makes them so cool, especially nowdays when anything with carbs is getting more and more rare.

I've got an old 73 triumph gt6 with a straight 6 in it that I'm dying to do a triple weber on some day. Dat sound yo.

 

Play with a quad carb bike and get back to me. It's not fun.

The sound is glorious though.

I have a soft spot for those old BMWs. Dad had a 1600 when I was born and for a long time while I was growing up. We lived out in Hawaii though so the salt air was a big rust factor and the bodies were not long lasting out there. Still, lasted better than the K-cars.

I think I'm pretty set on the carbs at this point. I want simplicity. I'm debating selling off the BEHR A/C kit, which is installed but not hooked up, and making this a dedicated fun cruiser car for the winter months down here in AZ. I'd like to keep everything very simple and clean. Then get something like an new NC or Focus ST for my daily once I graduate.

 

Yup do all that. That is the Miata for me. Nice, simple, refined, and clean. I'll drive it when it isn't melt your brain hot and daily my 48mpg Jetta. I poured too much money into the Jetta trying to get the best of both worlds(fast and comfy) and it wasn't worth it. The 2002 will only go up in value if done right.

 

I don't think the 2002 will ever be fast, but I'd like it to be peppy. Which is why I think a simple dual carb setup will be both cool looking, sounding, and add that little kick to make it fun. This thing was a blast when I bought it and it was falling apart, now that the big problems are fixed it's insanely fun.

 

Tons of parts ordered. Just OEM or slightly upgraded parts for the interior, ignition, suspension, engine, transmission, etc...

Current plan is to get the clutch, flywheel, and associated bearings and seals in. Then work on the interior. I have new carpet ordered, and trying to track down E21 recaros for the front and rear seats. Might just go with some Corbeau oem style seats.

Next week this goes in, along with a new clutch, the final big drivetrain part:

Well I've ordered the carpet, which is made by a member on bmw2002faq.com. I went with the original tan color (well as close as possible). I want E21 Recaros for the front and rear (they are very close to a direct fit). I will probably go something else though because they are very rare. I might just get my rear seats reupholstered in black, and get black corbeaus up front.

I have the long center console which extends past the shifter a bit, I'll keep that but remove the A/C face adapter and HVAC unit behind it and put in the adapter face for a radio and hazard switch.

My dash is cracked so I'm getting a new improved one from IEmotorsports. I might add a real oil pressure and oil temp gauge at the same time.

I need to headliner, which I'll have shop install, and I'm going to rewire the entire car from head to toe. I have a stock harness which I'm repairing now, and will swap it one for one just before I put in the new carpet.

I also have new seat belts for the front and rear.

I plan to tint the windows as dark as legal before all this as well, to keep the AZ sun from ruining everything.

In the end it should be all nearly new. I'm going with tan door cards, and carpet. Then black front and rear seats. The body will be red and black painted like the Alpinas.
