Very very cool build. Please tell me more about that coil setup.

just LS coils with 8mm leads

hornetball 05-14-2016 01:37 AM

Nice craftsmanship. Looks like a great drag race setup. Any timeslips?

Maybe this is the solution @bbundy has been looking for. Haha.

@patsmx5, next project to go with your compound turbo?

mx5psi 05-14-2016 01:55 AM

[QUOTE=hornetball;1331436]Nice craftsmanship. Looks like a great drag race setup. Any timeslips?

automatic conversion not finished yet still need a Tailshaft and i might up the boost a little if my tuner lets me when i go to get the green light to drive it hard

pdexta 05-14-2016 09:26 AM

Awesome setup, looking forward to seeing how it performs.

Stealth97 05-14-2016 09:37 AM

First tim I've seen someone use a proper auto Trans behind a miata engine. Would probably be really fun to drive with the manual shift mods. My dad's corvette has a manual shift turbo 400 Trans and it's a blast to drive.

We are lucky here in Australia the same auto was in a turbo 6cyl that people build so the parts are available only 2 issues we hit machining the rear extension housing to fit the bigger shaft and having a stall made apparently mazda's design is odd not enough room to fit parts needed but they sussed it out and frankestiened one from another converter

In the 6cyl turbo they claim 350rwkw all day so i think a 4cyl will be a little more so iam keen to turn it up next concern is diff and axels

jimmyneutron 05-14-2016 10:58 PM

This is interesting! Liking the coil setup and good craftsmanship it will be a blast to drive! 300wkw is around 400whp right? That sounds crazy fast. Subd

well a 3" exhaust shouldn't really fit with an auto we had a hard time keeping it above the frame rails as i wanted them to be the lowest point on the car https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1466811241

Probably the least impressive part of your build, but the USB socket in the removable dash trim piece is a bit genius. Will be copying.

mx5psi 07-12-2016 07:39 AM

Its cheap aswell

10/10 love built auto turbo miata

mx5psi 07-19-2016 04:43 AM

Testing

Needs a thermo fan on the auto cooler its 10 deg F warmer than id like but my auto builder laughed and said its perfect if thats the temp im getting without one it sits between 200-210 i want it solid on 200 engine is also 5 deg up on normal driving with the manual so ill probably change some stuff around bring it down a tiny bit other than that it drives amazing spins tyres into 3rd on low boost which used to be around 240kws its a heap of fun

*there cheap 205's so thats not impresive but we will see how sticky tyres go with more boost

mx5psi 08-04-2016 10:31 AM

Went for a drive sat night and decided it was time to put my big boy pants on and try high boost its not slow you can only use half throttle in second and third breaks down im guessing cause my plug gaps at .9 are too big so i changed plugs and gapped them down to .7 im hoping it will fix the issue

Half throttle in second is faster than wot on low its a heap of fun

Next job is new front rotors and brakes and clean up wiring for auto fan

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...004b946e4.jpeg

18psi 08-04-2016 10:37 AM

Very cool. Might want to clean up the oil on the VC

mx5psi 08-04-2016 08:49 PM

Yeah my bad left the cap a little loose when i changed the oil

Erat 08-04-2016 09:41 PM

.7?
I'm guessing .7mm which is roughly 0.028". I've got my plugs at .025" on stock ignition and it's fine at around 15-17psi. Any more is bad news(for me on pump gas), so i'm not sure what "high boost" is for you unless it's the 28psi referenced in the first post.

I must have missed it, what is the ECU?

mx5psi 08-05-2016 12:31 AM

25psi is high i might bump it up in the next few weeks to 27-28psi

18psi 08-05-2016 09:18 AM

I'm impressed you're not getting spark blowout at that gap on stock ignition.
I was never able to go past 18 on stock '00 setup, and about 22 on Toyota cops

mx5psi 08-05-2016 06:50 PM

I was running toyota cops im running LS coils now

Installing a cheap ebay mini amp and a bluetooth reciever so i have misic again i am about to order a gps based speedo output device so i can have my speedo back

aidandj 09-06-2016 06:46 PM

If you have ABS on the car you can do what we did here:

https://www.miataturbo.net/ecus-tuni...-sensor-85749/

turbofan 09-06-2016 08:30 PM

i needs video or it gets the :hatecat: s

mx5psi 09-06-2016 09:02 PM

No abs sensor as its a NB1 and that sounds a little hard to make happen as a gps based speedo output it just power and signal its very easy

video are coming soon ive been a little bit occupied fixing up my new daily i bought a crashed jzx100

Bump for vids and driving impressions on auto. I'm about to do an auto conversion on my 99. Also, who did you get the upgrade trans parts from if you don't mind me asking?

Nice build sir!

mx5psi 09-14-2016 05:25 AM

My impression of the auto is its amazing alot smoother and more driveable than expected actually easier to drive than the manual other than it wanting to blow the tyres off

the auto place is in melbourne australia they specilize in jatco's because they are in a large 6 cyl turbo car here in oz

the issues we hit
  • converters very small had to machine up a custom balloon plate section
  • rear seal inside miata extension housing only just fits
  • input shaft depth with converter
  • drop box for shifter very tight
  • tailshaft modified to suit larger auto output shaft
Upgraded parts
  • billet input and output shaft
  • fully manualised valve body
  • stronger bands and higher line pressures
  • retained over drive
  • waiting on a higher volume cast pan
  • b&m compatable shifter brackets
i opted not to have a trans brake as i wouldnt be able to help myself

Happy to speak to the guys here if you need help i see you have a 99 aisin box which i got warned away from to hard to control as its all electronic and no available upgraded aftermarket parts

other than that all good hardest parts finding the jatco frame rail and flex plate

sixshooter 09-14-2016 11:54 AM

Wouldn't a transbrake allow you to spool up the turbo at the line before launching?

Sounds like a must-have item to me.

miata2fast 09-14-2016 01:42 PM

You want the trans brake. You won't imagine an auto drag car without one once you experience it.

mx5psi 09-14-2016 05:02 PM

Small frame turbo has no issue building boost off the line the reason i opted out the car gets driven on the street alot and i wouldnt be able to help myself

later if i change turbo's its easily added

Ill try and gets some video's up its been raining for almost a solid two weeks up here

mx5psi 09-25-2016 07:10 AM

Good excuse for delays with the mx5

Been a bit side tracked fixing up my new daily picked it up too cheap to say no needed a bit of love its a jzx100 a toyota chaser amazing cars fairly rare here in OZ

i have some semi's for the mx5 so i might be putting them on this week and my remote bluetooth unit for the audio is due to arrive aswell this week so stuff is still happening

Got some 225/50/15's i had fitted today they are perfect i also picked up some stock rear springs and ordered some stock height sports rear shocks so i can try out and see what hooks up best at the drags

i havent made any video's cause i have let my registration lapse i will have that fixed in the next few weeks

miata2fast 10-05-2016 06:58 PM

We started a discussion on tires in another thread. Exactly what tire will you be using at the drag strip?

mx5psi 10-05-2016 08:56 PM

Yokohama A048's they were a good size and cheap i got them for $200 for a set of 4

i really think the best tyre wold be micky thompson ET street R's but at $600 i was going to give theese a go first
