XS-Power & SSautochrome Big 16G turbo... Bang for your buck Review.

5 Attachment(s)
First of all, good day everyone! I want to cover a very controversial topic, XS-Power and brother company SSAUTOCHROME's Big16G Turbocharger. I'm posting this review as I go so I can give a detailed and accurate review of the product and all that it entails. I, like you who are reading this have wondered if a turbo charger that does not have Garrett or Precision stamped on it will preform as well. I am here to walk you through step-by-step and let you know if it's worth your time and money to purchase a turbocharger at a fraction of the cost.

Before this turns into a flaming thread, I just want EVERYONE to know that if I could afford a ball bearing garrett turbo I wouldn't hesitate. However, i'm not made of money and the turbocharger that XS-Power offers fits my budget.

The turbo that is currently on it is a dsm 14b that has a LOT of miles on it.

Questions being asked:
1. Will it last
2. Will it perform well
3. How is customer service if need be contacted

I purchased the turbo on 12/08/12, the title for the turbo is TD05H-16G Turbo Turbocharger For Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 1 2 3 4-8 TO 450bhp.

Jdilla 12-09-2012 06:48 PM

let the flaming and hating begin... as soon as I get it in, we are going to put it on and dyno tune it. I will let u guys know what kind of power this thing will be putting down.

latena 12-09-2012 07:10 PM

Can we flame and hate you for starting this thread now, versus when you actually have something in hand?

matthewdesigns 12-09-2012 07:22 PM

I think it's probably fair game. OP, surely you've read all the shit reviews of these turbos on Tuners. Most of them fail completely within the first few thousand miles. Seems like guys here have good luck with Garrett knockoffs though. Also, what are you going to bolt this to?

petrolmed 12-09-2012 07:29 PM

I'm not here to flame, only to give some constructive comments.

First, don't ask for flaming from the members because it will be freely given and I'm sure you are well aware of its sting.

Like latena said, you would have been much better off posting this with review content instead of making us read through what we think will be a review. Posting real data might have gotten you some brownie points, this most likely not.

Also, I'm sure others will agree that some of the aspects you hope to review (longevity, performance) will not be properly tested with the confounding variables in your setup. All we can expect is a relative comparison to what you had before and its downfalls of choked up charge piping and ready-to-dissolve manifold. Haven't seen the downpipe but, no offense, can't expect much judging from the rest. However, this is a perfect way to test out how great that customer service is :fael:

This is a step towards changing your setup to something respectable, but I doubt a new turbo for the current hardware is the right one. I personally would've enjoyed reading a review with data showing your gains found from installing a well made manifold and nonrestrictive intake piping! Its all about optimizing the system, not trying to push harder against clear restrictions.

Good luck though with whatever you manage to discover!

Jdilla 12-09-2012 07:35 PM

I wanted to compile the data as it is presented. I will post hard evidence and videos as it comes.

ShockerGT 12-09-2012 07:44 PM

What manifold are you using/planning to use?

Jdilla 12-09-2012 08:33 PM

Well I already have a custom made DSM flange that is connecting my 14b to the head. Should be a direct replacement for my 14b.

Thanks, bud... I'm going to do the turbo and intake manifold at one time. Someone custom welded the entire intake piping from the MAF to the turbo, It's just one big j pipe. Whover built the car spent a lot of time with custom fabrication

Jdilla 12-09-2012 08:50 PM

after I get done with the engine bay and all it's components I think you will be pleased. I'm going to take the exhaust mani off when I do the turbo, check for cracks and leaks. Same with the down pipe and dump pipe. Once that is all done i'm going to header wrap and we should have something a little better... and yea and take the hood spacers off!!! lol

Just about anyone here will tell you the same. It's a piece of shit turbo. They are documented like crazy on the dsm forums.

No one here is wondering that. Seriously.

My turbo cost 150 dollars, is dead-nuts reliable and will make 470+hp.

Just stop posting.

lol we've been testing chinachargers for years and already know which ones work and which don't.....cool non-review review bro.

I guess we can use more testing of the mitsu styled turbos, even though most here don't run em lol

Next time, when you make a review thread, please review teh product beforehand or in real time. Not plan to do it. Every other retard n00b has big plans. We see them come and go with the quickness

viperormiata 12-10-2012 01:07 AM

In all seriousness, you're turbo hardware is so haggard and fucked that I don't think any results you post will be useful.

You obviously don't read.... I said I was replacing intake, downpipe and dump tube, pressure testing and cleaning up exhaust mani.

Are you even on a dsm forum, if you don't want to see or read the info then get off my thread. I'm on dsmtuners and there have been a lot of mixed reviews. I'm young and dumb why not try it and see how it works. If I blow the engine I'll drive my talon tsi awd and drop and v8 in the miata. This is for people who will read down the road and see that it is or is not reliable.

Jdilla 12-10-2012 04:15 PM

Monday the 10th and I received the turbo after two days. Looks to be a pretty solid turbo, hopefully get to put it on tomorrow.

3rdCarMX5 12-10-2012 04:25 PM

So, if someone has a cobbled together setup (that is just as much work as a proper setup) and they want to replace their blown out turbo with something that is known to be unreliable, they can come to this thread and see that you bought a turbo.

I hope that turbo enjoys driving around the U.S. on its way to your house, it may be the last time it experiences locomotion.

RyanRaduechel 12-10-2012 06:47 PM

So in other words, you don't want to buy my Garrett?

Got the turbo on today... found out that my 14b had some 1 or 2 bent compressor fins, no shaft play though.

I have a small coolant leak coming from one of my water lines. I'll fix that and take it for a ride tomorrow.

I preoiled the journal with lucas break in additive, the turbo looks nice and seems to spoil quicker than the 14b did. I revved the car to 5k and hit 4psi, i thought most turbos would only do that with 2 step.

I will post pics tomorrow and hopefully have a video soon.
