2001 SE Begi S4
For sale is my 2001 special edition BRG Miata
Price: $7000 OBO
Location: Pittsburgh PA
Mileage: 65,XXX
Title: clean
General Information:
I bought this car in July 2013 with 54k miles, installed turbo supporting mods (megasquirt, injectors + pump, wideband) in 2013 and turbo kit and other mods in 2014. Car was tuned by Early Performance in Uniontown PA before turbocharging making ~120hp and after where it made 250hp/230tq. The car is stored during winter in my garage. New Yokohama s.drive 205/50/r15’s were just mounted.
This is the 4th Miata I have owned, second turbo’d Miata, and by far my favorite. It is setup primarily as a fun street car and I have done a few autocrosses with it as well. I am selling the car because I just purchased a Lotus Elise.
Modifications:
• BEGi S4 turbo kit
• Turbo manifold reinforced by BEGi
• Garret GT2860
• Rev built MS3 basic + boomslang harness
• GM IAT
• Innovate MTX-L Wideband
• Innovate MTX-D Oil pressure and temperature gauge
• VDO boost gauge
• Injector Dynamics 725cc injectors
• Walbro 190HP fuel pump
• Mazdaspeed motor mounts
• Abe built 3” exhaust v-band with cat, resonator, and magnaflow muffler
• Koyo 37mm radiator
• Flyin Miata airflow (fans + shroud)
• Hard Dog Hard Core Double Diagonal roll bar
• FM Happy Meal stage 1 clutch kit with 13lbs flywheel
• Tein basic coilovers (unknown spring rate)
• 15x8 nickel 6uls
• Porterfield R4S brake pads
• Headlight reflectors painted black
Extras:
• FM Coolant reroute kit
• Extra wheels/tire set I used to store the car for the winter
Issues:
• When I bought the car it had weird electrical issues. The car wouldn't start sometimes, windows wouldn't go up and down, and power door lock wouldn't work. I pulled the alarm system that came with the car and that solved all of the issues, but left the power door locks in a non-functional state. The doors still lock but you have to lock both side manually. Also the car has no key fob functionality now, and there is a red blinking light that reminds you of that all the time.
• The car was tuned in the summer by Early Performance and in colder weather the warmup phase of the tune is not the best. Startups take a few more cranks than normal and things like overrun fuel cut don’t engage until it reaches temp.
• Soft top has a 4” tear above the glass window.
• Cruise Control was removed.
• Interior is a 5/10. Seats are pretty beat up, glove box was removed and the megasquirt is stuffed in its place.
• Paint is a 7/10. The front bumper and hood have a few dings and paint chips. Probably normal for the age of the car but worth pointing out as its certainly not perfect
• No headunit (I have it somewhere I just can't find it)
• The bracket that holds the 3 gauges in the car is kind of whack. The innovative gauges are bigger than normal guages and dont quite fit in it.
• Timing belt and waterpump has not been changed.
• Clutch noise: While the car is rolling in gear, with the clutch pedal pressed to the floor, there is a whine noise that correlates with the speed of the car. Not sure what this is but its been there since the new clutch was installed.
Accident history:
In 2015 I was driving down a local back road. Around a blind corner, a truck had dumped a bed of tree branches in the middle of the road. In an attempt to not plow directly into the mountain of tree limbs, I turned too aggressively to the right and then back left unbalancing the car. This resulted in slide that ended in the top of the rear passenger side quarter panel coming in contact with a guard rail. I made a claim with my insurance company and they popped the dent out and repainted the quarter panel. There were also some light paint scratches in the paint on the passenger door which was also repainted. Nothing other than the rear quarter panel and passenger door had any damage. I also had them repaint the trunk lid while it was in their shop. The owner of the car before me had a wing mounted on the trunk and removed it and repainted, but the paint job was substandard.

That took hours to make I hope some appreciates it. I've been driving the Elise exclusively the past few weeks only jumping back into the Miata to make that cinematic masterpiece. I gotta say a turbo Miata is more fun than a stock Elise. Someone needs to buy this so I can buy parts for the Elise so its as fun as the Miata!
Don't forget, the price is 8k OBO!

The Elise/Exige cars have a ton of issues that I wouldn't have thought they would have before researching them. I was always under the impression an Elise was 100% ready for track duty. However, the rear toe links are known to break likely causing a major accident, the oil pan has no baffling and they are known for oil starving, the fuel pickup point on the fuel tank is on the far left side so long sweepers are known to cause fuel starve, the cars almost all have an open diff because Lotus didn't believe the car needed one, and the intake cams wear abnormally fast on some cars and no one seems to know exactly why. I plan to address all of the potentially car breaking issues first, namely the toe links, then add some kind of FI down the road. If I ever bump into you at pittrace or a local meet I will have to take you for a spin in it,

Yeah, unfortunately the local miata scene is almost non existent except for a handful of moms driving NCs. On top of that many people (even car guys) are unaware of a miata's potential, esp one already setup like yours.
I never looked into Elise/Exige cars as they far exceed my car budget, but those issues sound like something to address before autox/tracking. I'd love a ride though! A coworker had an Exige, but I never got a ride before he retired and moved.
Hopefully your miata gets some attention, glws!
