That seems like an inplausible quote for a man that took the time to put together the philosophy and teachings of the Christ in his own bible.

I think I tend to empathize with Jefferson who seemed to believe that the man who followed Jesus' philosophy and moral teachings but dismissed his magical powers was a better Christian than the corrupt man that embraced church dogma.

 

I generally consider myself agnostic. However, I am very much of the mindset that I really don't care what you believe in, as long as you reciprocate.

That said, I have never been preached to by a muslim or hindu or buddhist. It's always the born again xtians that waste my time. I glad you found something to make your life better, now STFU about it.

I think the best thing about it is... the belief your body is nothing more than a car for the soul... and dying is nothing more than trading in for your next ride... what sux is car gets exponentially more high maintenance as you age, and rebuilds aren't quite possible... yet...

Off the top of my head, I can recall one instance of someone trying to indoctrinate me in a religion. I was this family on campus at CSU telling everyone they were going to hell. That was almost a decade ago. Since, I have not had anyone corner me and try to tell me I was going to hell and that I should buy their 10 step guide. Then again, I'm not stupid enough to watch the religion channels on TV or the home shopping network. Oh yeah, and a kid in a dorky suit and bike helmet came by with a book of Mormon. Help, help, I'm being oppressed!

I can not recall a day recently where I have not heard someone bitching about religion.

And the funny thing is, everytime I hear someone bitching about it, they always act the hero for some poor downtrodden other-person. They never sack up and say they are offended or angryor whatever. Its always some bullshit comment about how that might be inconsiderate to some hypothetical person. Costas asking what Tebows relgious views might mean to a mother of a child with AIDs for instance.

Those ***** are basically insecure and can't acknowledge it, so they pull on the hero costume, setup a straw victim, and then go ranting at the easiest target in western civilization. Religion in general.

I dont go to church, I do belive, I dont preach about it to people, it doesn't determine my vote, that makes me pretty much average. Horrors.

Having said that, buddy jesus is some funny ****. I seriously need a life sized one.

Buddhism is really interesting to me, I like that some Buddhist monks get advanced degrees and do research. Do you think of it as more of a religion or a philosophy? Can a person call themselves a Buddhist if they do not believe in "non harm"?

I really agree with you about stem cell research. A family member of mine has chronic sever back pain, and stem cell research could help him, but people with "family values" like to get in the way. But, it will happen some day, society will progress... eventually... hopefully.

 

Not at all true. Would you call a woman who contracted AIDS from her husband b/c he did not wear a condom on account of Catholicism saying it was bad a "straw victim"? What about people who can't get married b/c of people who push their views on others?
I am not mad at western civilization, besides most religions where started in the east, and I am not insecure. I admit I like arguing with people (especially when there argument is based on something false), and I do not believe that religion is all bad. I like poking fun at a lot of things, religion* is just one.

*The overwhelmingly vast majority of religions that is to say.

Thats why I made this thread. I don't want to stick it in peoples faces but several members including myself would like to be able to post certain things that others may find offensive. If somebody doesn't like it then they are free to ignore it.

 

I'm actually surprised you mentioned Buddhism as a philosophy rather than a religion. I think the younger generation Buddhists in this country probably fall more into the philosophy category. The Buddhism our parents practiced tend to have more non-Buddhist influences (particularly Taoist), and is more of a religion. Buddhism as a philosophy highly encourages self discovery and self betterment both mentally and physically.

Many monks complete higher education, or take part in scientific research (Einstein once said Buddhism is the only religion that can peacefully co-exists with modern scientific research), because learning through experience is a corner stone of Buddhist belief. A desire to learn is critical to eventually achieving enlightenment. It's also why we're allowed to visit all places of worship regardless of what religion it is.

As for whether someone can call themselves a Buddhist despite not believing in non-harm. I totally think so, think Shaolin kung fu. Why would a bunch of peace loving monks who gave up all desires to live peaceful lives need to train day in and day out in martial arts? Why did various armies fear them through out history, and burned down their temple? A quick history, of how kung fu became so entwined with Buddhism.

I mentioned the body as nothing more than a car for the soul. Thus car "maintenance" was necessary, especially for monks, who lived pretty difficult secluded lives. A traveling Indian monk Boddhidharma, developed a set of exercises specifically for the purpose to improving a monk's circulatory system, and health. These exercises were further developed into martial arts we know as Shaolin Kung fu, because of a need to protect themselves from the lawlessness of the times. At times, they've even allied themselves with armies, or fought against bandits, invasions and piracy.

 

i have been dealing with spinal issues which give me severe pain,

over the years it has caused problems with other parts of my body as well like muscles all over my body's being in extreme pain, constantly fatigued and some times not working at all, my Colan at times has become inactive which causes a whole lot of other troubles as well, it has been hard to eat and keep nourished, my liver has become damaged, recently my doctors have told me my heart is starting to go bad

hell im typing this with my right hand because my left arm decided it wanted to go numb again , i sold my supercharged miata a couple of months ago because driving stick can be hard to do or impossible at times, ( i still have my turbo automatic one but in all honestly i really dont even know how much longer i will even be able to drive

*my mother is Thai and comes from a Buddhist back ground will my father comes from the south and comes from a christian back ground, they divorced when i was 5 and i lived with my mother so i wasn't heavily influenced or indoctrinated in to the Christianity side of my father

my mom did not force Buddhist ways on me but it was a small part of my life growing up
we even went to a few christian churches while i was a kid

i did visit my father and his family from time to time though, they would push their religious views on me a lot, they still do as well to this day

i still love both sides of my family no matter the religions or customs they follow

most of my friends are Christians and i respect their views, i have looked in to different branches and researched it as well a long with other religions too

i have looked in to Islam as well

i cant call my self a Buddhist honestly but i will say i do respect it

as for Islam and Christianity i don't respect them , i don't agree with them. it is just my opinion and personal views
