Congress attacking Pizza Makers!
Representative Jared Polis (d., Colorado) has introduced a bill on the house floor aimed at severely crippling the frozen pizza industry.
http://polis.house.gov/UploadedFiles..._SLICE_Act.pdf
The so-called "SLICE Act" aims to declare that tomatoes are not a vegetable for dietary purposes, a ludicrous act which goes against the face not only of standard culinary practice, but of rulings by both the US Department of Agriculture and the US Supreme Court (Nix v. Hedden, 149 U.S. 304, 1893). If this measure is passed, it will mean that pizza can no longer be defined as containing one serving of vegetables for the purpose of school lunch nutritional standards.
Frozen pizza is a uniquely American dietary staple, enjoyed by two-thirds of US households, is rich in vitamins and minerals, and is among the top four sources of calcium, protein and fiber for children aged 2 to 18 in the US.
Representatives of the fruit and vegetable industry have declined to comment on their suspected involvement, however it's clear that the Green Vegetable Industrial Complex are major backers of this bill aimed at contorting federal law to unfairly disadvantage the pizza industry and force their products into schools. And what of the children themselves? Removing pizza from the diet will lead to a significant drop in consumption of dairy (in the form of cheese), grains and tomatoes and thus nutrients (e.g., calcium, folate, protein, phosphorus, thiamin, niacin and iron) provided by these foods.
Representative Polis' own public brief on the bill almost defies belief:
All this so that greedy corporations can sell a few more cans of non-US produced green beans, while driving small, independent frozen pizza makers out of business entirely. Explain to me how that's supposed to help cut down on the unemployment numbers!
Who is REALLY writing the laws in this country, anyway? Is it our so-called lawmakers, or the rich, fat-cat farmers?

"Pizza (...) it [sic] also loaded with sugar, salt, bread and cheese"
Seriously? Without salt, the human body cannot function- the walls of our cells quite literally fall apart in a manner similar to the way in which radiation poisoning destroys the gastrointestinal tract- a slow and horrible death. And "Loaded with bread and cheese?" How gullible does he think the American people are? Bread and cheese as dietary staples predate written history, and have been represented as foundational elements on the Nutritional Pyramid for as long as it has existed! All this so that greedy corporations can sell a few more cans of non-US produced green beans, while driving small, independent frozen pizza makers out of business entirely. Explain to me how that's supposed to help cut down on the unemployment numbers!

in baltimore public schools we were served tony's pizza (Schwan Food Company), which is a home grown mom and pop company not owned by any big banks and (atleast on record) does not contribute to any political party.
From my understanding they are the major supplier of pizza's to schools since the 70's.
they seem to be a truly middle class company who is being attacked by a politician who takes money from KKR and other large investment companies who support obomacare ect.
