Because I am a nerd, I started re-watching Battlestar Galactica on Monday ago. The 2004 version. Only about 30 minutes a night, which means I'm still in chapter 2 of the pilot.
It still stands up as a great show. A socio-political drama which holds up a mirror to 21st century humanity.
Commander Adama just finished the "I know where Earth is" speech, and here's the thing: It was a lie. A total fabrication made up by the Commander on the spot, because it was what the people needed to hear at that exact moment. And it had the desired effect: it gave the people hope; a cause to unite behind.
Still as in-tune today as it was 16 years ago.

"Madame President, an update on the head-count."
"Subtract how many?"
(short pause)
"Actually, you can add one. A baby was born this morning on the Rising Star. A boy.
(Very, very long pause.)
Been a while since I wept that deeply and genuinely in response to a work of fiction, such as some people believe the most recent election to have been.

On to Episode 2, and more of Adama's wisdom.
"There's a reason why you separate the military and the police. One fights the enemy of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people."
I fear that the current chapter of the political theater (the most recent presidential "lection) has served its purpose in drawing attention away from matters of actual significance.
