I saw a ridiculous billboard on my way to dropping my kids off at school this morning. It was regarding Black History Month, and Booker T. Washington.
I will preface this post with this: I think Black History Month is silly, and I don't have any particular interest in Booker T. Washington. In fact, I can't say I know much about him other than he was a leader in the African-American intellectual community. Despite these facts, I still found it offensive. The billboard was a picture of Washington, with #BlackHistoryMonth in the upper right corner. At the bottom was "BOOKER T. WASHINGTON: The first African-American on a postage stamp." Again, I don't know much about Washington. Couldn't name a book he wrote, or tell you where he spoke. But I'm pretty sure his greatest accomplishment wasn't making it on to a fucking postage stamp. |
