Yeah so apparently all furloughed employees are going to get paid for the time they aren't working.
so what in god's name is the shutdown about. Go ahead and have them all come in and have them at least do work and get a paycheck once a funding bill has been passed.
otherwise, the taxpayer in on the dole for millions and millions of billable hours without any work rendered.
what a crock of ****.

And the reason everybody got furloughed is that the government can't legally pay anyone until they have a congress-blessed budget (because the money doesn't legally exist), and nobody can legally work for the government if they're not getting paid. And the government has to pay everybody when this is all over because they have to give a 30 day notice if they're going into a no-pay situation, which they didn't have this time around (unlike with sequestration), because congress is legally required to pass a budget, which they obviously forgot to do this year. You can thank the American Federal Government Employees Union for these shenanigans.

Your use of 'dole' here is incorrect.

On dole: You're probably right, dole suggests some sort of charity or free will, not legal use of force. But your use of apostrophes or single quotes was incorrect as well.
Also, I'm unsure about this 30-notice thing you mentioned. They had to pass a law to pay these people as a paid vacation once the gov't is funded since the Antideficiency Act prevents them from being paid right now. If it was a legal thing, it shouldn't have taken an Act of Congress to make it such.
I wonder if there's a line item I can bill for "back pay"...

If this were a corporation, it would be like the Board of Directors deciding to shut down a number of divisions and send those employees home with no pay because they couldn't agree on a budget for next year. Not because there is insufficient liquidity or because there is a lack of available funding or because business had fallen off a cliff. In fact, business - while far from going gangbusters - was better than last year.
Unfortunately, a portion of the Board are still really pissed that a majority of the Board managed to get some corporate resolutions through a couple of years ago, and they want everyone to know just how pissed they are.

To clarify, only Federal employees that are furloughed will receive back pay. Civilian contractors and private sector groups that work with the government in some way will not. For example, the entrepeneur that runs trolley tours to visit historic sites or who does walking tours of a national monument doesn't get reimbursed for his lost business.

I blame passing bills without reading them and then waiting to implement a bad law until after a new Congress is in power (and insiders get free passes) and the new House not wanting to fund it since the Constitution says it's the House that should come up with a budget and then the President ordering its minions to fail the bill.

I used to talk about how I have spent considerable time in all 5 income quintiles, including 8 years in the bottom quintile. To a significant extent US distribution of income data describes not different classes of people, but the very same people at different stages of their life.

I have a few issues with Sumner's take on monetary policy (largely constructed in a void without a strong understanding of real-world banking), but - as a guy that has also spent time in virtually all of the quintiles - that's potentially a pretty spectacular insight.

Kentucky High Schools Ordered Not To Conduct Postgame Handshakes « CBS Cleveland
"Some holidays observed in the community that are considered by many to be secular (ex. Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Valentine's Day) are viewed by others as having religious overtones. The district must always be mindful of the sensitivity of all the members of the community with regard to holidays and celebrations of a religious, cultural or secular nature. The United States Supreme Court has ruled that school districts may not endorse, prefer, favor, promote or advance any religious beliefs...."

Kentucky’s athletic sanctioning body has ordered high schools not to conduct postgame handshakes in all sports following more than two dozen physical confrontations the past three years.

Highest percentage of voters calling for a third party since they started the poll.
Everyone will still vote for the Red Team or the Blue Team.
