in VA, recording the police is disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Virginia Teen Found Guilty in Cop Recording Arrest (Updated) - PINAC

A Virginia teen whose video went viral last year, showing cops ordering him inside a home while he was trying to record police activity in his neighborhood, was found guilty Thursday morning for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, even though the video shows he was doing nothing more than recording when they approached him.

However, the cops testified that prior to the video, Devin Thomas was “inciting the crowd by yelling obscenities.”

But that’s hard to believe considering he didn’t utter a single profanity when they confronted him, ordering him inside his home before pouncing on him and allegedly smashing his face with a baton.

Phone Company ?Outraged? By Fraud, Abuse In ?Obamaphone? Program « CBS Denver

A nationwide cellphone company distributing phones and cellphone plans in Denver as part of a massive government program says it is “outraged by the unacceptable actions” uncovered by a CBS4 undercover investigation.

The response from Total Call Mobile comes nearly three months after an undercover CBS4 investigation revealed multiple examples of fraud and cheating in the phone distribution program.

The Lifeline program is aimed at providing free cellphone service to the poor and needy. It handed out more than 13 million free cellphone plans in the first six months of 2014. In Colorado, the program handed out more than 117,000 free cellphone plans in the first half of 2014 or about 20,000 cellphones every month.

...

In one case a Total Call agent used someone else’s food stamp card to provide eligibility for a CBS4 producer. On another occasion another Total Call agent said it would be perfectly fine to use a friend’s food stamp card to establish eligibility and obtain a free phone.

In a letter to CBS4, Total Call has now responded saying, “Total Call Mobile is outraged by the unacceptable actions shown in the broadcast. The broadcast depicted both agents and applicants seeking to improperly participate in the Lifeline program. They were both engaged in fraudulent activity … to enroll in the Lifeline program among other improper actions.”
Still trying to figure out why people need free cell phones. oh votes, my bad.

Two weeks after Zuckerberg said ?je suis Charlie,? Facebook begins censoring images of prophet Muhammad - The Washington Post

Only two weeks after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg released a strongly worded #JeSuisCharlie statement on the importance of free speech, Facebook has agreed to censor images of the prophet Muhammad in Turkey — including the very type of image that precipitated the Charlie Hebdo attack.

Just now noticed this.

I don't really see a correlation here. I went to the CDC's website and dowloaded the raw data for total immunization exemptions 2012-2013 (source), color-coded the states by 2012 Presidential election result, and then sorted by exemption rate as a percentage, lowest to highest:

There does not appear to be a strong statistical correlation between electoral results and immunization noncompliance.

I then split the data into two columns, each representing the top half and bottom half of noncompliance (I excluded DC so that the two columns would be equal in size.) Then, I sorted the states by result of the 2012 election (arbitrarily placing Obama states on top and Romney states on the bottom), and then sorted those groups alphabetically:

Again, the two columns do not exhibit a strong correlation, with a roughly equal number of red states and blue states in each column; the data is 2 states out of 50 away from being dead-even.

Nor do I but do you think this would correlate nationally or is it unique to Dane County, Wisconsin. The author seems to make the link...

Unique subject anyway.

On the subject of data and correlation, this is nice and something you could use in planning your commute. Very well done indeed.

FAA Drone Rules

Article discusses the new FAA rules regarding private drones:

The Rules

Below is a summary of the operational limitations for sUAS: in other words, all the stuff that you must do, and can’t do. We’ve bolded the most relevant rules if you just want to skim:
•Unmanned aircraft must weigh less than 55 lbs. (25 kg).
•Visual line-of-sight (VLOS) only; the unmanned aircraft must remain within VLOS of the operator or visual observer.
•At all times the small unmanned aircraft must remain close enough to the operator for the operator to be capable of seeing the aircraft with vision unaided by any device other than corrective lenses.
•Small unmanned aircraft may not operate over any persons not directly involved in the operation.
•Daylight-only operations (official sunrise to official sunset, local time).
•Must yield right-of-way to other aircraft, manned or unmanned.
•May use visual observer (VO) but not required.
•First-person view camera cannot satisfy “see-and-avoid” requirement but can be used as long as requirement is satisfied in other ways.
•Maximum airspeed of 100 mph (87 knots).
•Maximum altitude of 500 feet above ground level.
•Minimum weather visibility of 3 miles from control station.
•No operations are allowed in Class A (18,000 feet & above) airspace.
•Operations in Class B, C, D and E airspace are allowed with the required ATC permission.
•Operations in Class G airspace are allowed without ATC permission.
•No person may act as an operator or VO for more than one unmanned aircraft operation at one time.
•No careless or reckless operations.
•Requires preflight inspection by the operator.
•A person may not operate a small unmanned aircraft if he or she knows or has reason to know of any physical or mental condition that would interfere with the safe operation of a small UAS.
•Proposes a microUAS option that would allow operations in Class G airspace, over people not involved in the operation, provided the operator certifies he or she has the requisite aeronautical knowledge to perform the operation.

In addition, in order to fly a sUAS, you (as an operator) and your drone would need to meet the following requirements:
•Operator Requirements:
◦Pass an initial aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center.
◦Be vetted by the Transportation Security Administration.
◦Obtain an unmanned aircraft operator certificate with a small UAS rating (like existing pilot airman certificates, never expires).
◦Pass a recurrent aeronautical knowledge test every 24 months.
◦Be at least 17 years old.
◦Make available to the FAA, upon request, the small UAS for inspection or testing, and any associated documents/records required to be kept under the proposed rule.
◦Report an accident to the FAA within 10 days of any operation that results in injury or property damage.
◦Conduct a preflight inspection, to include specific aircraft and control station systems checks, to ensure the small UAS is safe for operation.

•Aircraft Requirements:
◦FAA airworthiness certification not required. However, operator must maintain a small UAS in condition for safe operation and prior to flight must inspect the UAS to ensure that it is in a condition for safe operation.
◦Aircraft Registration required (same requirements that apply to all other aircraft).
◦Aircraft markings required (same requirements that apply to all other aircraft). If aircraft is too small to display markings in standard size, then the aircraft simply needs to display markings in the largest practicable manner.
