Default build thread for my xp car

So let me start by asking forgiveness for the number of pictures I'm about to post.

The car will run X-prepared in solo2. The engine and drivetrain are exactly the same as when the car was purchased, which is a Greddy kit with a small front mount, bipes, and 1.8 injectors. I do have a 1.8 rearend set up waiting to go in, but am waiting on the OS Ginken diff to arrive. Eventually it will get a full rebuild, MS, and at least 750 injectors running straight e85.

The car as it sits in the final picture weighs 1666lbs with fuel. It's a little front heavy right now, but nothing will happen to address that until the new rear is under it and the wing is on the back.

So here goes....

The car as purchased on 9/29/08

Nice job of adding lightness without tell-tale signs of a sawz-all hack job! I bet she really scoots now.

Forgot to mention it has an in-line walbro 255, DIY dual feed line, and an ebay mani and DP that were added above how the car was purchased.

Ha!!! Have to be 1648. It was 1623 before the dash cover and fuel in the tank. Bezel will be at LAP on the 26th if you're there. If not, I'll just store it in the trailer until we hook up.

so x-prep cars have no provisions for any kind of side-impact protection?

Autocross doesn't tend to involve too many collisions.

You don't think that little piece of aluminum angle iron is enough?

No. Nothing in the rules for any class for side impact bracing. If someone kicks the side of the car I'll have broken ribs.

Wheels are REAL 16x10 at 14.9lbs and tires are a Hoosier 22x10 slick that measure 22.9 diameter and 10.7 cross section on a 10" rim at 16lbs. Mostly went with this set up for cost since I already had the wheels. I just had to buy new centers for the right bolt pattern. Had to cut quite a bit from the front and back of the front wells. Actually had to cut the bumper cover. Also, they only had about 1/16" clearance on the back side of the inner wells, so a little massaging with a 3lb sludge was needed.

Actually we could build a non-turbo 1.8 and only have to weigh 1560. Haven't done any research on what kind of power can be made from the 1.8 naturally aspirated. Not having a turbo hanging off the side of the engine would help the bias.

Anybody know what the weight difference is from a 1.6 to a 1.8 w/ VVT head?

If I had big bucks, I'd be searching for a 3 rotor.

1560? Dang.. but at this point, where else could you pull weight from?

No benefit to go 1.8 NA to save 100 lbs min weight. It would take a bunch of cash to get to 150WHP. IIRC, John is around 145WHP in the CSP car. You are better off giving up the 100 lbs and adding boost. Even where you are now power-wise, it offsets 100 lbs.

This is quite nice... What are you planning to do with the big hole in the trunk? Or just leaving it open?

Or without spending big bucks, you could do a duratec 2.0/2.3 swap, lose another 100 lbs, get your weight distribution back to where it should be, and use a MZR cam cover to remain inside the "any corporate engine" rule. Quad4Rods makes a Duratec to T5 bellhousing, so there is no problem gearbox wise unless you find an 06+ MX5 trans which will bolt right to the duratec.
