dsm turbo, what size?
So I have recently learned that instead of my car having a GT2560r turbo, it has an old DSM turbo-___- and I don't know what size it is. I tried looking for an ID tag, and I found one, but it has no ID number on it. All it says is DSM T25/T28. I can only assume its very small because I make full boost before 3500 rpm but I just want to know which one it is. It has .64 AR on the hot side and M16 imprinted on it too.
its probably a fake egay one
There's no such thing as a T25/T28 so if that's what it says it's probably a chinacharger 2871.
Oh really? Thats lame. . I went from thinking I have an authentic Garrett turbo to a DSM turbo ( which is probably Garrett too) and now I might have a Chinacharger?
yeah, but on the bright side......wait, there's not bright side to this...nvm
I see what you did there
The bright side is that authentic Garrets are made in China anyway, and yours was probably made in the same factory with some of the same tooling as the real ones.
Brain's T3 50 trim setup outperforms the authentic S13 T25. So it's not all bad. That 2871 clone though is not great. |
There might be one bright side..a shimmer of light. Now everyone can know that chinachargers are reliable since it is has been on my car for 48000 miles.
You just had to post that link comparing the two didn't you. This thread is going downhill for me. But at least I know now I suppose. I'm definitely gonna be on the lookout for an sr20 T25 turbo
DSM=mitsubishi, don't they make their own turbos? I didn't think it'd be a garrett.
Yep. And mitsu turbos are arguably just as reliable.
If it was a mitsu wouldn't it say TD04 instead of T25/T28?
What does the manifold->turbo flange look like? If it is actually a DSM turbo or even a DSM chinacharger replacement shouldn't it have the funky triangle flange? That should be easy enough to check. |
Dsm turbos have a square(ish) flange with a round hole.
post a pic
I'm not at home right now, but Ill be sure to check when I get home.
DSMs could be had with both. Much like Saabs. Depends on year and trans, primarily.
DSMs came with t25s from the factory ... Lots of guys upgraded to 16g turbos from the early evos. If you're gonna do a Mitsubishi turbo go with a twin scroll 16g from an evo 8-9 better spool not to mention a host of upgrades available for it and the ability to run copious amounts of boost.

OP if you care to know for sure post up a pic. It's probably a Chinese knockoff as previously mentioned.
Just to clear some things up... 14b uses a two-bolt compressor housing outlet flange where an elbow can be bolted on. Evo3 16G turbos, and their knockoffs, use this kind of compressor outlet, too. T25 has an elbow cast in place. 14b on left, T25 on right. Also of note are the compressor wheels, with any "B" turbo having equally spaced blades at the same height. All "G" turbos (and the T25) have equally spaced pairs of blades which are stepped in height. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377398593 All DSM turbos have a 4-bolt turbine-to-manifold flange that is rectangular (oriented 90* when compared to a Garrett rectangle, if that makes sense), with a round inlet. The location and size of the inlet within that rectangle varies based on the turbo application. Some smaller Mitsu turbos from commercial trucks use a triangular, 3-bolt turbine/manifold flange, like the turbo used in some HKS kits for Miata. Mitsu flange on the left, Garrett on the right. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377398593 |

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377399605 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1377399605 sorry, I got busy. But here it is. very small I would say. I can't take it apart or off my car because there is broken bolt that connects the downpipe and the turbo and I dont have the knowledge or experience to take one of those out. You can almost see an ID number on the ID tag looking at it now but it isnt very clear. |
Chinese Garrett knockoff, no idea what model specifically.
I haven't been able to figure it out either. But now that I know what kind it is, I need to start looking for a different turbo. Any turbo would be an upgrade at this point, but I think an sr20 t25 turbo is what im looking for.
Hm its the 14b style of compressor housing but says its a T25/28. Weird ebayness. If that ever shits out this would be a nice upgrade that would last for more or less forever.
the world may never know what kind of turbo this is, only that its an ebay one. I'll definitely look in to that one you posted.
Is something wrong with it? There are plenty of people who run ebay turbos here. Some of them even perform on par or better than their true Garret counterparts.
I mean if you aren't happy with the spool (which I wouldn't be surprised by seeing some of the 2871 churbo dynos) that's one thing. But just because it's a knockoff doesn't mean you need to look for a replacement. |
no there's nothing wrong with it, I was just thinking for when this one finally does shit out, then ill know which one i want and already have a replacement for it.
you'd be surprised at how long some ebay turbos last for.
most that are not pushed, and are from the handful of less-crappy vendors, actually hold up for dozens of thousdands of miles |
Yeah as I said a few posts ago, its been on my car for ~47000 miles and it hasnt given me any problems yet. I guess I got lucky
