Exhaust Cut Out
I have the Begi S kit, and will be daily driving the car for the next maybe 6 months. I prefer the car to be stock sounding when just driving around. I also want to be able to open the cut out and have the extra flow and spool, as well as the sound of an open downpipe.
My friend has a supra, running open downpipe and it isnt THAT loud just driving around town, this is a supra though.
Anyone here has an exhaust cut out? I am looking to get an electric one so it can be closed and opened within a few seconds.
Will it sound horrible? What are the pros and cons?
Thanks guys!

well I have no muffler if that counts, 2.5" dp -> 2.5" cat -> nothing.
93dB is the legal limit for front engine cars in Oregon, I'm at 93.4, very loud. But then again I only track my car.
If you're looking for cheapness, I've seen a few people who have bought a throttle body from a junk yard and weld it to a Y pipe. Pull a cable to open the throttle and voila. Cheaper than the $200ish electric units. Looks like *** though, but its under the car so who cares.

Do you have the kit installed yet? I ask because it might well be quieter than what you expect. Mine is DP > TP > 3" exhaust w/ one straight-through muffler, and it's not even that loud. Braineack's suggestion should be pretty quiet, especially with a cat. If you still want a cutout, you might as well make the difference drastic. So, have the piping as unrestricted as possible before the cutout but muffled as hell after the cutout. A lot of the SRT4 crowd does this, a 3" DP with a cutout pre-cat, and the stock exhaust left in place. You can do what you want for triggering the cutout if you go electric, if it were me I'd want to be able to trigger it manually vs. by throttle position or boost level.

how loud would u say it would be if the cutout would be at the downpipe in db's approximately?
i was planning on keeping the stock exhaust so that it would be quite as hell, then i can make it loud when the exhaust cut out opens via a electric switch.
i dont want it to be TOO loud, if it just sounds stupid loud, or stupid bad, then i wouldnt want to do it...
yes the turbo is on the car, but i am running no engine management, no boost, wastegate is currently disconnected. still, the car sounds more or less like stock since it stock exhaust..
anyway, would be too loud for the track and spirited driving with the cutout after the downpipe? or would it sounds just like garbage?

I had to drive 2 full days running an open 2.5" downpipe. It sounded pretty nice without the expected "lumpy" sound. The spool noise is amazing.
I will be planning on doing an electric cutout. There is a Y shape pipes that go from 2.5" >3" cutout > 2.5". You can make it DIY using a hack saw and clamps.

I have a open downpipe because my exhaust broke. I find it livable, but then again I am far from a bitch when it comes to NVH. Plus the turbo spool/spool noise is awesome, it doesent sound bad at all. Only reason I dont like it is because im sure it puts a target on the car when it comes to cops...

does anyone have any open downpipe vids?
or want to make some? idle, casual driving and wot would be awesome to listen to, to get me an idea of what the sound would be like and how loud it would be!

I'm used to loud to loud exhaust I say go for it. When I had my 2000 Z28 Camaro the cops never bothered it, and it had no mufflers. They didn't bother my 67 Mustang when I ran open headers for almost a year. It is how you act around them that gets you busted. You could hear my baja bug coming 2 blocks away because I had a megaphone stinger on it. Again no issues

i know a guy with one on a 1.6 turbo and his is great total sleeper and when he wants speed he hit the switch and it sounds nice with the turbo spool. i have been in cars with ricer exhuast that have been much louder. qtp is the brand he has and its a life time warranty. i have a 1.6 with full FM exhuast, and i wish i would have done his set up because i would have saved a bunch of money and been total sleeper.

i have a manual cutout (just a steel plate w/ 3 wingnuts holding it on) and my roomy has an electric cutout (on his GTP) both bought from DMH. good product. on my miata it isn't that loud at all, it's just bad *** because of how loud the turbo is. on his GTP it is ungodly loud though (its tight to **** with people, just be curising by them then click one button and you think you have a monster truck beside you...lol 0
