Why doesnt anyone use external dump tubes on miatas? With the small exhaust sizes that are usually run, I figure they would help. Plus the sound you get from a dumped turbo is

 

People probably don't like the sound. I had my wastegate dumping to the atmosphere on one of my Talons. I liked it but it was loud. Also, if they notice, you'll fail emissions.

 

Yea my eclipse was dumped and i loved it. Its loud but only when your on the boost.

 

im building my dump tube today after work. Not sure what size it's gonna be. I'd like to find some 1.75ID but I might have to settle for 2.0 or 2.25.

I've run external dumps on all my cars. On my 240sx I put a lawnmower muffler at the end of it. Sounded like....well cool.

sounded kinda like a jetsons car. Not exactly but there was a subtle hint there. Mufflers only lasted about a month each but they were only like $4.50 at Advance.

 

Loud, annoying, illegal for emissions, cop magnet, etc.

it's only loud if its not muffled. It's only annoying if you dont happen to like it. It's only illegal if they test emissions in your state. If you're at full boost in the vicinity of a cop, he's gonna pull you anyways.

 

Loud if not muffled - Check. I haven't found a good EWG muffler that doesn't sound like **** or burn out quick
Annoying if you don't like the sound - Check. I hate it. There's a reason I spend money on audio for my car
Illegal - Check. Got emissions in MD
Full boost by a cop? Cops don't give a second look to Miatas around here if they're within the speed limit or close. One blasting around with an EWG will surely get a 2nd look. We have exhaust sound ordinances in MD-DC-VA. I don't agree with them, but they're enforced.

I love the way it sounds and yes, this is how I run mine. I wouldn't run it any other way. Sounds like a nasty bitch on the gate at 17 PSI.

yea i live in va and had an external dump on my car, but the car was stock looking and cops never looked twice at me. Has anyone that has one seen a difference in hp, just figured that with the smaller sized exhaust most people are running it would make a difference.

 

I run external dump on my miata..... and love it!

 

My tial is an external dump, i truthfully don't notice how lowd it is over the turbo and exhaust noise, my exhaust isn't loud.

 

I really wish people would quit saying that... there are federal emissions laws too... one of these days the feds are going to start enforcing them it's just a matter of time.

what about open downpipe? how loud is that on the miata. i know some honda guys running open DP and its not loud at all
