My downpipe is still going strong, corky mentioned that it probably wouldn't last more than 200 miles.
It'd done around 3000 highway miles and 2 autocrosses wonderfully thus far though so I'm happy with it.

hmmm, would you ever make another downpipe?

cjernigan 12-28-2008 09:19 PM

Not without a car in front of me, even then it was a pain in the ass doing it in my apartment's parking spot then driving to the welding lab at school.
If I had a garage to do things in I would help out more often.

Why did Corky think you wouldn't get more than 200 miles out of the DP?

Curiousity killed the cat:)

Hmm. I just built a downpipe, and I"m wondering how to make the external gate tap into it. Our setups look identical pretty much. It just looks like if I put a wastegate flange and pipe the way you did, that I could never get it installed. Did you install yours from below or above? My downpipe I built goes in from above, but I dunno if it will go in from below. Have to check.

Maybe his car will take it from all angles?:giggle:

Probably with all the Tupperware shit all around it. :giggle:
Anyways, I did this today, and it fit... After I cut some weird "notch" off the side of the bellhousing that seemed to server no other purpose that to cause my downpipe not to fit. 20 seconds with a sawzall, and it fits now. :) STILL gotta finish the exhaust though. I hate exhaust. But it will finally be better.

brilliant writeup! lots of great info that i think will help. great pics of the down pipe. i plan on making one very similar, if not identical to yours. looks great!

patsmx5 01-13-2009 08:31 PM

Yeah, I finished mine. No flex joint and it's flux cored... so not nearly as pretty. I didn't even take pics. But it's working great. I basically did what he did, but mines 3" off the turbo with a 2" pipe off the wastegate that T's back into the DP like his does, but mine enters perpendicular to the DP. Chad, your engine bay is so clean. I hate you.

m2cupcar 01-13-2009 09:24 PM

That engine bay is screaming for a big cold air box. Sounds like a job for some sheet aluminum and tig. :D
