i'm tying up loose ends before final installation.

BEGI has a heatshield that will fit my system for $79, FM's is ~$90-100.

what are some other inexpensive options?

 

I used a piece of 18ga. sheet metal from my old hvac unit... free. It was just a matter of bending it to wrap over the top. I did have a blanket type from a transit bus that insulated the engine bay. It did an incredible job of blocking heat, but on the flip side I believe it caused heat soak in the engine bay because it block so much air flow around the turbo. This hurt bad in stopped traffic. The rad fan seemed to have trouble exiting air from the engine bay. - rob

 

I test fit the greddy heatshield from FM to my HKS manny and gt25 and it fit fairly well. It was just a matter of repositioning 2 brackets to fit my setup. I'm not sure what manifold you have, but it may be worth it to modify this shield because it's cheap, works well and looks great in the engine bay. I plan on doing this someday.

 

i have an fm/begi manifold.

 

When I don't have my Tarmac(short lived offering) installed, I have 3 bolts snaked through holes in the hood to mount a cookie sheet. The wrapping on the brake reservoir, etc and a chunk of heat shield blanket hanging behind the turbo protects everything on the firewall.

 

I used the the polished stainless heatshield offered by ATPturbo.com. It looks very nice and seems to do a nice job. It will only work if you have a T3 rear housing.http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/me...egory_Code=BCS

I've thought about constructing my own from essentially a paint can cut in two. They are made of pretty thick stuff and can line the inside with heat shielding cloth or what not. If it doesn't turn out well you're out...nothing.

 

I've seen stainless cookware modified for this purpose as well.

 

Is there a general consensus on wether its better to really really shield the turbo itself or if its better to let the turbo 'breathe' and shield the fragile stuff within proximity of it?

I was looking through some magazines and one time attack skyline had the entire exhaust turbine wrapped like a burrito in a sheet of heat wrap that was clamped on both side of the turbine... other setups I've seen leave the turbo exposed but place heat shielding near the firewall to protect the lines back there... is it bad to keep the heat in the turbo or is that better?

"Heat" is the energy that drives the turbo. It is best to keep it in the system. At some point I will be modifying a piece of pipe an creating a heat shield from it. I just have to find a nice section of SS pipe at work.

 

i bought the BEGI piece. someone i know sent me pics on it and it is better looking than the FM unit not to mention far cheaper and better construction.

 

i received the new BEGI heat shield.

once again, it is AWESOME. WAAAAAY better than the bowser shields FM is pimping and it cost me $89 SHIPPED. FM wants $98+shipping for their sheel metal units.

When I bought my FM2 it came with the bowser heatsheild,it took me a while to bend and twist to make the heatsheild fit,after I finally convinced that ****** thing to go on it fit so poorly that I took it off and put it in a box and stuffed it in the closet.

Kung fu let me know how good the fit is on the BEGi sheild.

 

How many people are running without a heatshield right now? I've had the bowser shield for a while but all the welds have broken and it does't fit well at all with a 2.5" DP. Now its rattling and disturbing my fun.

I have the heatwrap that came with the kit around the master cylindre and lines, but I don't like how without the heatshield my hood steams on a rainy day. I've seen these fitted turbo garments occassionally. Has anybody looked into those? I have no idea what they're called.

 

I'm glad you like the heatshield, KFJ. Corky makes some fantastic pieces, and I really like the lack of an FM markup. I think BEGI will do well on their own.

Let us know how it fits. Mine fits very well, but considering that they used imy car to design the piece, I'm not suprised.

i have a buddy that has an fm 2 and no heat shield. i'm going to test it on his car so he can use it until i install mine. i think he'll buy one too.

gtwre: i still have insulation on my hood from the greddy kit i had previously. i am more concerned about the braking components getting cooked. also, i would be worried about the turbo on your car baking the adhesive on the underhood bracing, making it brittle and causing it to release. can't have enough heat shielding imho.

Just FYI to those who haven't seen my engine compartment...even though I have the heatshield, Corky still put some protection on the brake pieces on the firewall. I think too much is better than not enough.
