Heater hose relocate ideas

So I am at that point in my turbo installation process that I am installing my turbo. Weird, right? So now I have a small obstacle in my path that I have to take care of. It turns out that the heater return hard line that runs off the mixing manifold is hitting my downpipe preventing me from seating the turbo on the manifold.

I am brainstorming  some ideas as the auto shop on base here is closed until Friday.

So far what I got is...

1) Try to bend it around to the other side of the dip stick. It seemed like a tough bit of metal so I think it may crack if I bend it, but hey... IDK.

2) Cut dat bitch, and just run it straight without the bend .

3) Flip the mixing manifold and run the heater line somewhere else. This one seems like to much work.

I think most people bend it toward the firewall more. That's what I did.

Yeah, you can bend that thing where you want.

I've found it's much easier to take it off and bend it too.

fooger03 11-20-2013 08:26 AM

put it in a vice, not too tight. Heat it with a torch, not too hot. Stick a ratched drive extension into the tube and carefully bend it straight, not too straight. Be careful not to oval out the end.

It's much easier to manipulate than you may think.

Just put a 1/2 drive extension inside it and bend it where you want to without removing anything except it's rubber hose.

Easy.

The only logical answer

nitrodann 11-20-2013 10:20 AM

maybe it's not half drive.. But yeh just bend it.

I put a 90* fitting right off the heater core to point it towards the master cylinder booster. Then I ran a long line along the outside of the engine bay, to a "T" in the lower radiator hose. In my setup, the mixing manifold is flipped and welded. Alternatively, you could tap the welded mixing manifold and stick in another 90* fitting.

Just take it off, throw it in the vice and bend it however much you need.

If you do oval out the end, stick a socket (somewhere between 12mm to 14mm) in it and hammer it in until its round again.

Thanks for the plethora of ideas. I might do a setup like what Curly has, but if I get pissed off while I'm working on it before I head off to the hardware store I'll probably just beat the shit out of it then become furious and end up breaking it. Then at that point I'll have to use his idea.

I will try my best to contain myself. :)

3 options.

Bend the bitch back an inch.

Do the quick reroute where you toss the rear coolant neck in the front and the front neck in the rear then weld a pipe to the inlet mixing casting coming from the radiator and run the lines together like in curlys picture.

Last one is to run a full coolant reroute and do the same shit with the front mixing casting again like in curlys picture.

I guess your last option is to run a hyper reroute like 18psi says and buy one of these.

If you've got a cast manifold, you don't need to take it off. Just get a Gordon Freeman crowbar and apply some leverage. Not recommended with thinner-walled tubes, though.

What unit are you with? Im also on pendleton during the week, although my Miata lives up in Glendale.

Mine is similar to Curly's setup but I routed the hose under the brake booster and along the far edge of the engine bay near the fender line. It's tee'd into the lower radiator hose as well.

Has anyone tried using the kia thermostat hosting that begi uses for the reroute?

ls1motorsports 11-22-2013 07:40 PM

Nvm I'm retard. They probably don't have the same opening on the flange

baron340 11-22-2013 07:53 PM

Actually the bolt pattern is identical and the openings are close. But I don't recall if it seals properly onto the water pump. I seem to remember thinking about using that for the radiator hose at one point, but decided to weld and flip the stock mixing manifold instead.

I'm at the H&HS on the airstation right now. What about you?

Darthteddy 11-23-2013 10:24 PM

I also work on the airstation at 303. Hanger 3.
