Default Hood exit exhaust

is there any benefits/drawbacks to having a really short down pipe.

ive seen alot of honda/dsm guys channeling their exhausts directly trough the hood. It looks intimidating but is it worth all of the noise?

ive never seen a miata with an exhaust routed that way. i figured it was because most of the manifolds for these cars sit the turbo exit pretty close to the firewall.

discuss.

The only time I have seen it vent upwards was on the Lemons miata. Well really they kind of flipped the stock exhaust manifold over and put the turbo out the hood. Really on a street car you would get pulled over very quickly. Also some tracks require you to be below a certain DB and it would be tough to do that with a short DP out the hood.

One of the drift Miatas does it too, John Deere style with a flapper. Looks like ****, but gets style points.
