How many of you changed motor mounts?

I'm about to do the clutch job and I'm thinking its about time to change motor mounts too...its a 1990...120k on the clock. I'll prolly go with the MS motor mounts, and I was just wondering how many of you guys would recommend these and how much of a PITA these are to put in?

Braineack 10-04-2006 10:24 AM

I've always wondered the same. I'm stupid and didn't do it when I had my motor out!!! I did do the clutch then though.

Drive side looks easy as it's right there, may require removing the DP.

I've heard from people that have done it, that it's not as big a job as it sounds. Looking at how much my motor rocks during starts/stops and on the dyno, it's near the top of my list now as I am sure that mine are done for.

turbopezz 10-04-2006 10:43 AM

pulled my motor out and one was not attached at all and the other has a hairline crack in it.the car has 200k.

miatamania 10-04-2006 11:17 AM

ooo...wow, thats not good ^ at all lol.

Can it be done w/ ramps and a jack...w/ everything attached?

how involved is this...I just keep finding motor pulls...not sites on just changing motor mounts.

ah...03...didn't go back that far...theres a TON of info on motor mounts on there :D.

I figured you could just do that, but I heard somewhere otherwise.

Sirnixalot 10-04-2006 12:12 PM

i just dropped my motor, the car only has 97k on it but both mounts were almost completely torn

before i put it back in im going to drop in some mazda comp mounts

The MS mounts are nice. You will notice a lot less shifter waggle when get on and off throttle.

I changed my motor mounts to MS mounts and it made a hell of a difference in terms of the drivetrain feeling more solid,I highly recomend doing this mod to any miata and especially a miata that is turbo or supercharged.

F20turbo 10-04-2006 12:18 PM

I did mine when the engine was out of the car, feels more solid.

i replaced my motor mounts meyself with the MS replacements. it took me longer than most people said it would, but all you really need is a floor jack, jackstands and some wood blocks.

remove the front wheels too. i used a 24" prybar to make adjustments to get the holes to line up. at 100k on my '92, one mount was compressed, the other had tears in the material (not the metal).

the new mounts also brought back improved shifter feel.

Braineack 10-04-2006 12:21 PM

::adds another project to the list::

improved shifter feel...really? hmmm this is def something I'm going to do then, I'll try to do it before I do the clutch/flywheel so I can beat the hell out of it later on ;D

bripab007 10-04-2006 01:44 PM

Yes, I noticed improved shifter feel, as well. Don't really know how much NVH was added, as I installed them while the car was down for building the turbo kit. Driver's side wasn't bad at all w/o an exhaust manifold in the way, but the passenger's side was a small bitch.

VRTSid 10-04-2006 01:49 PM

any solid mounts out there? or are the ms the stiffest you can get?

jayc72 10-04-2006 02:19 PM

Closest I've heard of.

miatamania 10-04-2006 03:07 PM

ouch...I really wouldn't want to run solid...at least not in a street car.

penpen989 10-04-2006 03:33 PM

i did the MS mounts, also the MS dif mounts, all in all it makes it much more stable feeling.

Kelly 10-04-2006 03:41 PM

The MS diff mounts are worth it for sure. They make a great combo.
