Default How to Work Around a Big Backdoor IC?

So, I need to fix a problem that the original owner of this car decided to create.

The original owner paid some pretty sick money to have this fabricated.

It is a 20"x11"x3" dual backdoor I/C. Here

They then decided to use a grossly undersized "custom" radiator.

Rad

So, by going backdoor, it seems like they've ruled out ever upgrading to a quality rad, like a Koyo - or even better - Sav's Trackspeed piece.

My question is this - is this intercooler salvageable if I need to go to a proper racing radiator? It seems like it won't likely work due to the space required in packaging the Koyo or Trackspeed. Which also then ensures that I'm going to have to pony up money to reroute the whole system. BTW, that hairdryer is going to be removed this Winter, I don't know what the original owner was smoking.

Looking for some insight here on what recommendations there might be for remedying this situation and protecting for Sav's radiator or a Koyo rad.

Thanks...

Have a custom radiator made that follows the contours of the IC.

Or, how about a CIVIC radiator, they're tall/narrow and you should be able to find one that fits between the in/out on the IC. Get as thick of one as you can find that doesn't hit the crank. Re-route FTW.

Is it a street-car, or for track-use? Is the current radiator causing overheating issues? Do you have a re-route already?

It's going to be a track car, it has a built motor, and will put out a lot of heat. That current "custom" rad isn't even 1/2 of the size it should be.

Sutto13, put that "custom" IC/Rad combo up for sale on one of the "other" forums. Someone is bound to think that it's "dope". Then build a set-up that will stand up to the demands that your car will see.

Put up your location and the car details in your sig.

dstn, do you have a recommendation for a good IC setup? I'm going to be running a 3071R, ID1000s, E85 - shooting for around 370whp

There may be another way for me to salvage this IC. Look at this shot and let me know if you guys have any ideas on how to modify the endtanks to allow for clearance of a big radiator.

What's a backdoor ic? And what's wrong with that hairdryer? All I can see that's obvious is that it needs more FR stickers.

Looks like you might be able to cut and reweld the inlet and outlet to the sides, and remount it lower. Then do a standard around the radiator pipe setup. And by radiator I mean Trackspeed radiator.

I think you'd make more if you sold the intercooler/radiator combo as a pair though. It's not a bad setup, just not ideal for tracking.

Don't forget to do a reroute when you change all this up.

That's a T3/T61 .70. The guys at "Full Race" convinced the kid who owned it that it was cool for his street car. Take a look at that compressor map when you get a chance. Won't work out with the plans I have.

Backdoor IC - ie. backwards facing inlet and outlet.

before moding the car even more, i would suggest spending $50 and getting a autometter coolant temp and take the car out on track and see what the temps get up to. If cooling is an issue then go from there.

IF this is really a setup done by Full Race i would suggest calling them and asking them about it, they should be able to provide you any maps, dynos, etc

IMO, Full Race is a no joke shop who knows what they are doing

Full Race built it, but I've gotta question their engineering acumen the way this system was designed. Curly, do you have any links to pictures of good around the rad routing setups with large rads like the trackspeed piece?

Probably your best bet for the ultimate track ic is going to be the 600 hp precision intercooler that sav runs. I'm also installing one on my car this week.

This is kind of what you're going for, although i'd combine a number of those pipes into one and use silicone couplers for some of the angles.

Seems like it could be a drag race build with nozzles blowing **** at it to keep it cool.

I've been trying to figure out what a "backdoor" job is all day.

just get a ebay intercooler and get a legit radiator.

i would think that the engine is more important that the boost.

lol, let me save you about a thousand bucks and a weekend of wasted track time: you're going to have major CLT issues with that setup.

They clearly have zero experience with Miatas, though, if they put that radiator in that car.

If you're looking for bombproof, my 600hp precision core does the trick. With my crap intake placement, I see IATs of around 25 degrees over ambient. On the first lap or two, it's more like 10-15 degrees over ambient. I'm sure better intake placement could knock this down to ~10-15deg post-heatsoak. The problem with the 600hp core is that it's god damn huge - mine is mounted just below the frame rails, and it sits at the same level as the bottom of the front subframe. You can forget about a stock undertray, stock plastics, etc. - you'll need a fully custom flat undertray.

Once I fix my intake placement I might throw a 350hp core in the car to test it out, since that's what we'll be using in our kits.
