Default i need a new intercooler but dont know what im looking for...

i went to the drag strip last night and was gettin 150*F-160*F with an ambient air temp of only mid 80's. im running a mitsu big 16G turbo and starion stock intercooler.

im aiming for 325-350 whp @ 18psi.

needless to say i need a new front mount but im also not looking to spend alot of money(ebay specials welcome). what is everyones setup? i dont know much about intercoolers and i have limited space.

i was looking at this one below...what do you think?

I think the general consensus is that eBay cores aren't that bad. I had one on my Talon and it worked fine. Unless you've read all the IC threads here and found the "perfect" one, then just buy it and try it. Probably be everything you need. If you really want to know for sure, do some math on the heat exchange potential of the core so you know it will benefit your setup.

is 2.5" inlet and outlet needed for 325-350whp? or will 2" be ok?

I'd probably look at 2.5 by that point.

I have a Precision 600hp core and it's fantastic. It's 31x8x3.5, I trashed a 28x6x2.5 eBay core for it. 15*F delta to ambient after a full 60-120 pull, on all the 4th or 5th gear pulls it's ambient+8*F. I probably have 40% of it blocked off, too.

You can get 350whp cores for well under $300. IMO, it's a more solid option than an eBay core.

is bar and blate better than tube and fin?

look at savingtons sig pic, he went through the effort of making his front opening smaller.

but if you want to do this:

look stupid without real benefits, be my guest.

This is where it would help to put the gist of your setup in your signature. Can't blame us for assuming you have a Miata, right?

JT, the one you posted should work. Not bad as long as you get it to fit and make sure there's sufficient airflow THROUGH it and not around it. Maybe figure out how to shroud it from behind to draw air through it more effectively.

Tube/fin and bar/plate the general consensous as far as I know is this:
-tube/fin slightly better heat dissipation but slightly less flow. more fragile
-bar/plate slightly less efficient heat dissapation but better flow. more sturdy

IMO tube/fin is a tiny bit better, but from what I read the difference isn't really drastic so either one should get the job done. the kind of driving you do though (constantely over 100 lol ) id probably get a bar/plate just because you'll have bugs, rocks, dirt, etc slamming against that thing and you want it as strong as possible to withstand all that. basically just about anything will be better than that tiny/shitty starion ic you have now lol

lmao...thanks vlad... that shitty starion ic is a tube and fin and brian beat the **** out if it before i got it...note the rally racing gone bad mark on the bottom pasenger side of it... and it has no leaks... ill try to get it ordered today or tomorrow. im gonna throw in a bigger radiator in and make a shroud to seal it to the bumper when it gets in. so 13.07@108mph on a 2.23 60' at 159*f intake air temp should drop to the 12's with a decent front mount?

if your ait is lookin good I think we'll be able to bump your timing a bit in the midrange and a good amount up top. I looked around at some maps and yours is definitely very safe, so I think we should be able to get that trap speed of yours up a bit with the better heat exchanger and more tuning.

my biggest fear is that once the weather starts heating up (100+*) and on our shitty 91oct **** we really have to be careful and watch for det

I HIGHLY doubt you'll hit 350whp on 18psi on our crappy 91oct.
Maybe with a ton of water/meth injection or e85, but on pump 91 forget about it.

Also get rid of that crappy 2" piping and run 2.5" at least.

I think with all the improvements and tuning you might get really close to 300 maybe even hit it.

I would go for a really nice core, garret or precision, especially with your ambitious power goals. Your gonna need something decent, 16g turbos blow alot of heat at those power levels.
I had a 1g dsm with a evo3 16g on 26psi used a precision 650hp and it worked amazing, previous cooler was ebay and there was an obvious power gain right of the bat but more importantly i could do pass after pass and not get any slower like i did with the ebay core.

Man, that festiva must be a blast to drive. On Clubprotege there is bunch of info on BPs and turbo setups, they even have KLZE fests from all motor to fully boosted ones.

Any pics of that engine bay?

d-series.org depeding on the threads, many times has a lot of useful info. Its a good forum as long as you can handle the honda worshiping.

there are some pretty good pics in my cop thread

https://www.miataturbo.net/showthrea...highlight=cops

honda worship isnt bad at all as long as it stays in reality.... but when some jack *** says a stock GSR 178HP at the crank new can make well over 200whp on intake and exhaust alone even after 150K + mileage, then i just tune out and disregard ever thing that person says as stupidity... the only fwd car ive lost to in recent memory is a 93 hatch with a k20 turbo... 519whp @ 2500lbs is hard to beat :( .... and thats on an actual dyno ... not mouth diarrhea
