Having the piping come up through the holes in the core support, how do you guys that do it this way get your hood to shut? Do you just cut the braces off the hood where the piping interferes? Does anyone have any pictures to help? Not afraid to cut the braces, just wanted to make sure before I go at it. Thanks for any help.

 

I went though the hole on the passenger side. I had to cut the hood even with 2" piping, but it fit easily. If I was going to do it all over I'd be running a custom radiator so I didnt need the stupid jog in the piping.

 

As you are aware, you have to cut out the bracing, or at a minimum, hammer it in.

IMO, if you must go over the radiator, there are better ways to do it. Just pivot the radiator and fit the pipes between the rad and the core support.

I think this really all depends on your turbo manifold setup...

Running a low mount Begi S6 kit with this hot side pipe (have ac & ps)
Flyin' Miata : Turbochargers : Parts and upgrades : 1994-05 compressor to intercooler hose
Worth every penny to not worry about the extra connections.
PS line bracket needed to be bent for good fitment on my MSM.

 

There's no way you could get away with the hammer. Mine almost touches the outer skin of the hood and I have the tiny 2" piping.

 

For your design, yes. I've seen others which were just hammered ... which I didn't think was possibly until I saw pictures.

Regardless, I'm biased to the radiator pivot since ... shocker...that's what I did. This allows more freedom of design (in my case, a very direct charge pipe path). It does require some re-engineering of the radiator brackets and ducting. It also requires slimmer fans, such as SPAL units. It was a fun exercise and I'm happy with the results; however, if I were to do it again I would have run the pipes FM style.

Mind you, I picked up this car for $1200 so it's rough.

 

That's how it was routed, all 2" piping. It went UNDER the radiator so far that it had scrape marks on it, so I wanted to route it over it. The hood closes enough that the headlight lids are level with the hood, so I think I have enough clearance. I don't have the bumper back on yet, but it should be even with it. I have couplers and such coming in this week.

 

This is how I have it right now. Needs some clamps still, and I need someone to trade me megasquirts! Then oil change and put the bumper back on and I should be good to go.

But rather wondering just how bad of a clusterfuck you've ended up with.

 

The car was in worse shape when I got it.

 

Oil leaking at every connection in the piping (because PO routed oil drain going uphill to the passenger side) so oil backed up and caused the turbo to burn it.

 

Running on a Vortech FMU (unknown disc) and a timing box. Wondering how the compression is, can't wait to find out /sarcasm.

 

Isn't this the same car with the crazy oil return or was that another car? Looks similar, don't know where I saw it.

As for the piping, I guess its better than before but you really need to go a different route for it not to look terrible.

 

Yeah the oil return went uphill twice going to the passenger side, and they used heater hose! The main thing I wanted to go for was to not have the piping scrape because the PO had it going under the radiator, and there were scrape marks from doing it that way. I don't really care about looks, I have my '96 for that, just as long as it works good then I am ok with it.

 

I'm not going to search but there are a lot of threads about intercooling routing. search to win. There are LOTS of pictures too.

I saw a lot of people making new radiator brackets and angling the radiator back to let the piping come in behind the core support but in front of the radiator. I eventually will go that route but I just want the car done and drivable. I will probably tie the WG open until I find someone that wants to trade me ECU's.
