ITT: quiet BOVs/bypass valves
#82
the yeah the 710N was common on the Audi stuff and I remember dealing with those things years ago. that valve was revised several times to make it more stout and the 710n was the result. remember the placement of the valve on the a4 is right next to the turbo and many of the a4s are running about 20+PSI. point being if you locate it away from the turbo it should be fine as a cheap option if you don't wanna spend like 250 bucks on a BOV.
I would stay away from the Forge and Baily o34 style valve a diaphram or a o-ring and piston. personally I would go oem off another car, like the a4 bosch valve or do something like the synapse. forget the middle of the road ****, I had one that blew a diaphram and one with a piston that would seize up from time to time.

The forge has a pssss noise while the ssqv whistles. Stock the ssqv knock off leaked like a **** however oiled up and plugged up using rtv its working great.

Bumping this as its relevant to my interests.
Anyone else got any more suggestions?
Main goal: QUIETNESS, just like my NorCal bretheren.
I'm really leaning toward the Greddy Type-s, or one of its many many knockoffs. Was going to use a tial, but they are just not quiet, and I am not wrapping foam around it, so that's no longer an option. The type-s, on the various cars I've listened to it, is kinda sorta like the dog whistle someone mentioned earlier, very high pitched and deceptively quiet. Ideas?
If not I'll just use one of the bosch bpv style replicas in all aluminum

Set up incorrectly as in too tight or too loose?
(can't see vids at work so I'll check them later)
I noticed the shiuend/y8s comment before and I'm surprised by the tial: the ones I heard on the internet and IRL are/were all loud. Its why I got rid of my TiAL that I loved so much. I just don't want loud.
As for the greddy type-r, they are 'spensive as hell and hard to find, so probably won't go that route.
right now its between the greddy s or one of the bosch recirc replicas in alum routed to atmo.
I know re-routed would be best, but my intake will consist of like 10" tube and filter, and not worth the hassle to plumb back into.

I'm running this old-*** huge-*** HKS unit on the MX6. It's dead quiet. Previously ran a Greddy Type S, Greddy Type S knockoff, and a Greddy RZ in that order on that car. The Type S knockoff was the loudest by far, followed by the Type S and the RZ.
On the Miata, i run a Go Fast Bits that's set on full recirculate. It's obnoxiously ear-splittingly loud. I hate it.

Yeah quiet was NOT on the menu for that thing. It may have quieted down a little bit if i tightened it, but i doubt it.
I paid $50 for my HKS bov. That would be my formal suggestion. Get your search on.
Also bear in mind that this car runs a bit more boost than most Miatas, so i'm not sure if that affects things. (Doesn't stop my Miata from being stupid loud, though. I shudder to think what that GFB would sound like venting 30psi on the MX6.)

I've heard a knockoff Type-S, sounded exactly like my genuine type-s. The only difference we could spot between the two was the name plate that GReddy is etched into is blank on the rip-off.

I bought an SSQ knock off. It wouldnt hold boost at first, I did some crap to it, it was bone dry so i lubed it up to hell and back, the bolting surfaces werent flat mainly because the paint they use is garbage so i sanded it down to a flat surface, and it stopped leaking. Also the holes where the bolts go were leaking so i used rtv to seal them tight.
These holes on the front are plugged with rtv not grease.
Problems with it are, it does have a rubber diaphram so it will most likely rip.
