What oem front diff is a direct bolt-in on my '05 obxt and where can I buy it the cheapest? what's all the differences between a phase 1 and phase 2 block? What's the most affordable factory turbo subaru engine without any VVT or electronic throttle while still being durable enough to put in a boat?

Phase 1 and phase 2 block I dont know, if you are referring to stages they vary from company to company, but generally (Cobb specifies as well) Stage 1 is a tune. Normally a piggyback on the stock ECU. Stage 2 is a downpipe and a tune.
VVT for the WRX didn't come around until 2006 I'm pretty sure, so I would say an EJ205 engine is what you are looking for. Just change the up pipe, the cats have been known to self destruct and destroy your turbo.

The head swap: It looks like people are swapping 1999 heads onto the NA type motors because they have better flow characteristics and valve angles for turboing NA motors.
6 Speed Swap: From what I found they are a bit stronger than the 5MTs and they have a lower top-gear ratio for higher speeds I think.

^Almost got it right sorta with the coolant reroute more or less but not exactly... bottom line, more desireable coolant flow/path designed to better cool the back half of the block. Many different ways to do a coolant reroute, but buy any of the production kits and be happy, or mix&match parts to build your own.
Got it right with the head.
6th gear in the 6spd is actually shorter than 5th in the 5spd. The tranny is built with closer ratios, but will not give you a higher top speed. Most guys who swap in a 6-spd will also use a 3.9 or 3.6 rear dif, as the 6spd with 4.1/4.3 makes 1st gear useless on even stock power.
Got it right with the head.

I'll study the stickies more and post up when I'm ready to start making something.

I have read about the overheating and the coolant re-route before. I am pretty sure its just reversing the flow of the coolant.

I dont know about the front differential. Why wouldn't you just ask which transmission would swap into your car? You can get something like that on NASIOC I'm sure. There is everything subaru related on that sight. Cars getting parted out everywhere.

MT.net people are more of a romraider type crowd than an accessport crowd.

Everyone who tunes their own cars and advances their own timing and things like that. Did you learn how to do so on the forums or is it much more complicated than that? Tuning a car is a big part of the price tag for a build IMO.

After:
1. paying over $500/6 hours back in '04 to have nate & jermaine @ turboxs to "tune" my sti on their dynapack, just to have to stop at the first rest area on I-95 and disconnect the utec
2. Pay some silly amount and 3 weeks to have Dealer Alternative "tune" my Link only to have them totally F' it up (and which Ken hill (a real tuner) @ FM fixed for free, quickly, via telephone)
I realized most "experts" are really idiots compared even to my limited intelligence and with only slight common sense, initiative, and the proper tools it's really quite simple to do things on your own and save tons o' money.

If the resources are available to me I would be very interested in doing the research and tuning myself. Even if I end up not tuning my car I would still like to learn more about EM and tuning.
^ Did you mean they left the green test mode connectors attached on your subaru? lol!
Pro!
Do you guys have any "Stickies" about self tuning, or maybe a link or two?
-Dave

It's just they (turboxs) were ok at tuning WOT on a dyno but absolutely sucked at anything other than that including the street tune to make sure it was smooth which IMHO is more important than a peak hp number and they knew that. But the car was completely undriveable part throttle when it would switch in and out of the utec map.

My friend had a Utec on his wrx back in the day (2004?). absolutely dog ****. I think he made like 200whp on a vf22/supporting mods setup and like your car, ran really horrible daily. he switched to ecutec in 2005 and it was a bit better, but still sucked because of the locked ecu bs.
When romraider/ecuflash/ecuedit/etc. started getting popular in the scoob community it was a complete game changer. Right now its pretty much the norm for 95% of the street cars on nasioc and most other scoob sites.
It is truly awesome for what it is.
