Default Need 6 speed help

I have a tranny with no shifter.

Will a 5 speed work in there??

I appreciate any help on this.

I need this up and running ASAP. I am doing a demo for Fleet week during the SPeed Festical for the military here in San Diego next week..

Thanks everyone.

Savington put a 5 speed shifter into a 6 speed somehow, IIRC he said he had to fab up some spacers or something. Lets see if we can get him to chime in here.

Don't think so. 5-speed has one locating pin, 6-speed has two.

Nothing magic. I just pointed him to where he can get a new one at a good price locally.

10-4. Is that one he linked to any good on e-gay? About 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of the others...

Why not get the stock one? It's not expensive.

Logged into Mazda motorsports website and sure enough, the stocker is quite affordable! I assumed it wouldn't be. There I go assuming again.

thanks everyone

lots of talk, especially on m.net about ebay short shifters. I bought one, it definetly reduces the throw, but it does increase shifting effort. my nylon pivoting ball was broken when I got it, so I bought a new one from an auto store (~$10). snapped it one and it went in ok, no problems. all I do is race my car though, and the extra shifting effort is annoying. honestly I might put my old one back in.

I should figure out what kind of shifter I have. The throws are significantly shorter than stock, effort is about what my 5-speed was. I had to lathe up a spacer to let the lower shift boot sit high enough to not pinch the fulcrum, though, so I think it might be a 5-speed shortshifter with grooves for both pins.

Just one more tidbit of info to add:

All 99+ trannies have two locator pins, both 5- and 6-speeds. To use a '90-'97 5-speed shifter in a 99+ 5-speed tranny, you just have to knock out the rear locator pin in the '99+ tranny's turret.

I know it's not directly-related, but it's info. that might be useful to some folks.

I don't think MazdaSpeed would appreciate us posting their racer pricing on the web. Do you race?

I hate all you queers with machine shops in your back-yard.

and fyi: the NB 5-speeds have two dowels, but you can push them out, like a turd.

If no one can help you out, go to The Partsgroup - Mazda Miata & RX8 Used Parts and contact them (they sell parts mainly for Miatas and RX8s). I just snagged a 6-speed lever there for a good price.
