Your proving my point even further. It's your daily. You are a SUPER turbo noob. You will ruin it if you choose to turbo now, or inside of a year from now. You cannot afford to blow your car up right now.
you are also failing to realize how fast a bigger, newer motor is.
you have bigger problems though. It's a 1.6 car. So it needs at minimum, a rear end swap (1k). That still leaves you with **** brakes (500 to fix that) . You will need these even with a turd 1.6 set up. So now you are 4k deep into a 1.6. How smart does that sound? I can find a handful of nb1's for less than that.

You see, that's where I'm conflicted. My Mia runs like a wood burning stove, not a single thing wrong with her, plus she's my daily. It just doesn't make much sense to me to swap a VVT right now. Maybe when her engine finally gives out I'll go for it, but I'm really just looking to make a good 150-200whp

You can totally turbo your 1.6 and have a reliable 200rwhp.
Is it warm where you are? Can you ride your bicycle everywhere you need to be for the weeks at a time your car could be down?
There are very few people here that have a turbo miata as their only car. Those that do have had to shell out for a rental...sometimes quite a few times.

In my case it was a serious case of the snowball effect, I used the very best parts available. It got out of control and I would have lost my job if I had not owned another car.
I think 18psi said it best "Are you making your 401k / IRA investment goals, no credit debt and still have expendable liquid cash?" if so, then go for it. Otherwise it is a ..not great decision to trubo. Not to me anyway, but Im a chicken sht about the unknown and I like to live with a conformable lump of cash in the bank. To me, comfortable has 5 numbers or better, not 4 or 3.

Turbo Miata=lots of money, lots of broken stuff especially if your cheap, NOT a daily driver.
A 1.6 turbo is fun yes but not a good investment. I got a 1.8 for damn near free and thats a way better platform. A 1.8 spools faster and makes more power everywhere especially if its a VVT
Ryan hit the nail on the head with the VVT swap. Itll make your goals and have much less downtime until you get money to waste and another vehicle

Uh huh, so you install a megasquirt on saturday and cant get it to run well enough to drive 100 miles on Monday. You work until 6 or 7 every day. what do you do now? Thats just the megasquirt.

Being single (By that I mean just a girlfriend) and "sacrificing" your free time for this is crucial. I can see how a lot of peeps just don't have this privilege.

Say what? Are you suggesting he run the turbo on the stock ECM for a few weeks? That's a great way to melt the engine. Megasquirt-->learn to tune-->turbo in that order.

Yossi was suggesting that the car should be megasquirted NA first. The bit about the stock ECU was said so one could swap back and forth if the car needed to function properly to get to work on a monday.

That's how I understood it. I plan on doing this stuff in stages. I'll be getting some injectors and a megasquirt first off, just so I can get used to tuning and data logging as I have absolutely zero experience in it.
