My 99 motor NA is quicker than that. Damn.

Actually, the quoted passage disagrees with what you said:

Because everyone who is making decent power here runs a speed-density system, not the AFM.

BTW I wasnt alluding to you when I made that "balls" and "crap" statement.

The point is, unless someone tries this setup (near the cat, not near the muffler), speculating on its performance is of no consequence.

I wouldn't say everyone as I'd call 175 decent power and BEGi claims it on a kit that they say you can run with the stock airflow meter

JT and 18psi, how tough do you think it is for Subaru to switch the position of the intake and exhaust ports on the cylinder head.........not very. With that they could have drastically shortened exhaust manifolding and also run a front mounted intercooler very easily.

Even with all those advantages they still didnt do it. I think its beyond me and you to speculate why. I'll take Corky's approach and say that Subaru knows a thing or two more about turbocharging than any of us here. Hence nothing wrong in copying their layout and giving it a shot.

Speculating that one layout or the other is "balls" and "crap" without trying it, IMO, is stupid. But hey, no harm in following convention for the majority of us.

bro, are you serious? do you have the slightest clue how hard and impossible that would be? not to mention how retarded. first of all, the oil pan wont clear or the intake manifold would have to have a WEIRD ass design that would MAJORLY fail. next all vacuum lines would have to be 4-5 feet longer, and theres ALOT OF THEM. next nothing would be able to be mounted on top of the engine like it is now since the exhauast mani would melt it. front mount? it would still be the same length piping since THERE IS ONLY ONE PLACE IN THAT BAY THAT HAS ROOM FOR THE TURBO, AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHERE IT IS MOUNTED ALREADY. i could go on for like 4 pages, but dont want to thread jack.

as far as "dont hate it till you try it" here's a nice little link for you\/

watch at the end in "boost" slowest 15psi ive ever seen, in matters of spool and speed of car.

lol WOW.....that looks like complete ass not to mention slower than a snail. hahaha id love to read some of the threads with this guy defending that setup :bowrofl:

pipefather, im really not trying to start anything or argue with you, my opinion is that rear mounted turbo on miata's is kinda dumb, lets just agree to disagree and everything's cool...peace

Me neither, but did you even read what I said? The dumbass in that video mounted the turbo ALL THE WAY in the back of the car, and anyone who thinks their spark map has "autotune" shouldn't be allowed within 3 feet of an ECU. He likely made another hundred thousand compromises in system design, and here we are taking that as the benchmark for an alternative layout.

I, on the other hand, said it might not be such a bad idea to mount it in place of the cat, thus making the header length somewhat equal to that of the Subaru.

And the whole point why Subaru was brought up, was as an example of how they considered this to be not such a bad idea, I mean if it was, they would have changed the layout by now. Even the WRC cars have the turbo in the same exact place, look it up.

Again I'm not saying this is optimal, but it could be a good solution for someone who is on a really tight budget and doesnt want to spend money on a manifold and downpipe.

Corky Bell 04-30-2008 10:53 PM

The limited amount of heat energy out of that bare backside is going to compromise turbo performance...... Not to mention use of sustained boost.

left field 04-30-2008 11:12 PM

why do you guys keep talking about rear mounted turbos?:jerkit:

Toddcod 04-30-2008 11:24 PM

I got a rear turbo! Powered by Bean burrito's and unsweet tea!

Guys anything can be done if you like the battle. But there are so many used parts that you can bolt up easy. WHY!
I tried to make my own A/C bracket on my 300 hp CJ-7. 2 weeks later I just spent 275 dollars bought a new compressor and bracket and was done in 2 hrs. A/C was alot nicer than playing with it.

18psi 04-30-2008 11:52 PM

bean burrito's power for the winnnnnn :D

bokeymiata 05-01-2008 12:32 AM

i've done quite a bit of research on this and will be doing a remote system, but it's going to actually be a front mount system. two smallish turbos and a seperate oil cooling system mounted ratrod style.

i know this sounds thrown together, but i actually put a lot of thought and research as well as doing some drawings and before all's said and done i'll probably have my bro draw it up in autocad.

to those who doubt :fawk:

18psi 05-01-2008 12:40 AM

good luck with that man. post many pics if you can and start a thread about it. it should be interesting to say the least..not my cup of tea but nothing wrong with trying something different

J.T. 05-01-2008 12:41 AM

Autocad FTW, but drawing something that complex would be beyond me. Designing a 3'd drawing of a house was cake(it was pretty cool, could do a digital walk through and stuff, I miss cad.) Your brother must have skillz that killz

Why would you use/need 2 turbos?

18psi 05-01-2008 02:26 AM

hell make it 4....GO ALL OUT:giggle:

JW here...what happened to this kurt rohmer guy. I cant see any of his posts in this thread ( https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/sho...+Rohmer&page=4 )

...did he get like hardcore banned or something?

Braineack 05-01-2008 05:45 PM

he deleted all his posts, some of those got purged.

If you wanna read up on the updates of the worlds most halfass turbo install,go to CR.net,he post updates regularly on that site.

I try to stay away from CR.net, I don't want to get JDM'd in the ass

Cliff's notes:

255 lph had come loose in the tank, used a new nut and bolt to secure the stock brass base- blazes through 7k in first 3 gears. major hairy on top of 4th and 5th.

time to go to the dyno for tuning and pulls.

still popping a major silicone coupler around 17psi... 1 out of every 3 times. fabricating a couple of bolt holders to keep the pipes together and taking the strain off of the silicone coupler. P.I.T.A.!!! but it should hold to 21 psi (my goal).

mrjasey 05-02-2008 09:16 PM

i dont like how the rear mounts have the air filter under the car
