Default So is anyone running the Shanghai-S yet?

Cheap kit Begi is putting out. Whos had the guts to try it? Im thinking about going with the Shanghai-s, and not adding ANYTHING to it. Looking at this kit, how do you think it will do as is with nothing added?
BEGI Shanghai-S Turbo System 1990-1993 BEGi

My plan is to run it as is, with a DIY FMIC. I want to get it set up and running, then later on add MS pNp. Thoughts?

Oh, you.

Anyway there's at least one person here who has one on order. I'm sure whenever they get it they'll post a thread.

Yeah, and I hope that one person (I think we are thinking of the same guy) lets me take a ride in it when he is done. He should have it soon, and Im sure he wont waste time installing it either.

Why won't BEGi offer a warranty like the $1000 American (Freedom) made turbo for the Communist, authoritarian, child-labor turbo with mystery construction and reliability? I can't reason simple concepts.

Because Begi is known for providing reliable, well constructed parts no matter where it was made. I was hoping they would test the **** out of the turbo, put their stamp of approval and cover the warranty themselves.

Why not? We don't fix Garrett turbos. We never have. They go back to Garrett.

It is not like we warranty anything that is made by someone else. That has always been covered by the original manufacturer. I just wanted to make sure it was clear that if it breaks within the warranty period that it will be sent to the manufacturer for repair. If you get a bad autometer gauge, you are subject to Autometer Warranty policies not BEGI's. That is industry standard, and our standard policy for the last 20 years.

Shanghai kits have not shipped yet. I would expect them to start shipping later this week / first part of next week. I need to get a new oil inlet fitting for this turbo.

I apologize Stephanie, I was under the impression that if anything happened, people would ship it to begi and let them take care of it how ever they wish. BTW, are there any dyno graphs yet using those turbos?

those ''freedom'' turbo's don't have a warranty through begi either! besides, if you go to ''american freedom turbo's'' website you'll see that they have manufacturing plants all over the world, including communist russia! lol not really russia, but asia, europe, south america, among others. anyway, you don't need a warranty on a 150.00 turbo, if it lasts 1 year it was worth it. the 5 that i personally know of are all over 2 years old with 0 problems. including mine that is almost 4 years old and 40,000 miles of street,drag,auto-x, and trackdays action @ 18-26psi (not on my miata)
besides, corky wouldn't be selling it if they didn't try them out first.

I've had one on order since the first day that Stephanie posted them on the website.

I talked to Corky and he put me in touch with the manufacturer over in China. My wife and I are in the process of adopting the to two Chinese children who actually built the turbo. As soon as the adoption comes through I am putting them to work in the garage doing the install.

I hear they don't eat much.

If you gave them an old iron skillet, some scrap aluminum, a dremel, and a torch they could probably make you a spare turbo in two or three days. I smell an opportunity for an entrepreneur!

What about when it seizes, goes from 150,000rpm to 0rpm in 1 revolution, shatters the compressor wheel into 1000 pieces, and destroys your engine? Of course, that is a very rare occurance... most failures are just leaky seals.

What happens is that they won't replace your motor... but neither will Garrett. The warranty you're paying for is not to replace the turbo when it starts to leak a little... it's the peace of mind that it's not going to destroy your engine.

In the end, if a new Disco is $1000, then I can buy 2 Freedoms and 2 spare used motors for the cost of a Garrett... and probably part all the accessories that come with my used motors and end up way ahead. But then again, what is your time and ***-pain worth for all of that.

I hear a lot of people saying Chinachargers are reliable in the short term... but will they last 100k+ miles of daily abuse for everybody? I hear 40k... but that's the highest mileage I've ever heard for one of them. Only time will tell. I'm a potential customer... but I need a few more datapoints... time.
