the neocooler!

TurboTim 03-21-2008 09:26 AM

12x18 core?

About time. Personally I don't like those tiny intercoolers some of you are using, they look funny/undersized (even though they are probably fine), like an MSM intercooler.

Then again mine's way offset and looks funny too.

jasonrobo02 03-21-2008 09:37 AM

Brain, what is the total length of that thing?

m2cupcar 03-21-2008 10:03 AM

The question that begs to be answered: Why? Are you going to run more boost? Or were intake temps elevated? Or did you finally admit that offset intercoolers are too cool? ;)

sbrian2 03-21-2008 11:29 AM

Why do you need to offset your intercooler? Do y'all pansies need A/C?

Loki047 03-21-2008 11:31 AM

Anyone else seeing Taser Shots of the day and getting sorely disappointed?

m2cupcar 03-21-2008 11:34 AM

No a/c is for race cars.

loki that's a great idea for a legendary BS forum thread

no, simply cause i can. old core was 11" in length, so it didn't fully cool the charge. this new core is 18" in length and should fully cool the charge as much as it can. I was only seeing a 20°F delta before, but comeon....it's cool.

new teaser (sorry no taser):

rappadan 03-21-2008 11:47 AM

woohoooo. looks like its at home! BTW scott we are going to be at Damons right at 50 and 28 and i'll give ya call when we get out so i can get the hoist.

hustler 03-21-2008 01:43 PM

I want to paint my biggest sized BEGi FMIC, but its too pretty.

Looking very nice, Scott. Not just the IC- the whole package. I'm so deliriously happy to see Rev2Rev rising from the metaphorical ashes. :bigtu:

I want to pull mine pretty bad.

m2cupcar 03-21-2008 02:12 PM

:giggle: Yeah Sav- I can tell you know what real heat is like by the location in your in your user info.

I got stuck in an interstate traffic jam last summer with a 101f ambient. I did about 3 miles in 45 minutes w/o a/c, so I can't imagine being stuck in a "man sized" traffic jam.

Let's face it - pulling the a/c is the easy way out of actually making it all work with all the turbo stuff.

sbrian2 03-21-2008 02:21 PM

I guess you pro a/c guys like that power steering and all that other fancy stuff that slows you down and adds weight too? :giggle:

I dont have P/S, so I guess im only half fancy. Like M2 said, 100* weather stuck in traffic after working 10 hours is no picnic.

No P/S here, but I couldn't give up A/C on the street.

patsmx5 03-21-2008 02:33 PM

You guys are nuts. I have to have my A/C and powersteering. This summer I'll be driving around with two SC's and A/C, or I won't be driving it. I gotta have A/C.

madmalc 03-21-2008 03:01 PM

i have no power stering or air con (i am from the uk so aircon isn't really needed)

zoom2zoom 03-21-2008 03:23 PM

After last summer I will be running a/c. We had 13 days in july that were 100 or higher and it sucked without it.

I just messing with you guys. My Miata is not my daily driver, so when I drive it the top is usually down. I have a 6 mile commute on back roads to work, so getting stuck in traffic is not an issue. BTW, symmetry ownz joo! ;)

Wht isn't it centered in the front? And those bent aluminum brackets don't look like they will hold very well.

I'm seriously considering pulling the AC and PS in my '01 when I do an internals rebuild.

What is really funny is I bought the '01 in '02 as a demo over a '90 because it was almost new and I would not need to pump money into it. Then I discovered "mod fever" and had a turbo and numerous other mods in it within a year. :bang:

a/c dryer.

they will, there are three plus the pipes themselves....last time I only had one s-bend.

I love my AC/PS in the 01. get rid AC and the car is a two season car out here. dont listen to savington who lives in 72 degree weather 10 months of the year.

scott, when ARE you gonna get real brackets?

miataspeed1point6 03-21-2008 11:14 PM

My car never had A/C, sometimes I want it, but things are so much easier without it. For me it's not the heat but the humidity.

I just bought the 12x18x3 intercooler yesterday. I almost bought that larger one instead, but I didn't want to modify my stripes kit. Think I'll be ok?

that7guy 03-22-2008 12:13 AM

Looks good! Needs a full detail when its done though

Braineack 03-22-2008 11:04 AM

Originally Posted by y8s (Post 231693)

it ain't falling off. The lower bracket to the radiator secures any forward/backward movement, the top two secures any side/side movement, I bend them like i did so there was some play. I used a hump hose on the coldside and the 45° bend on the hotside will have play as well. like I said, it ain't falling off. I guess you never saw my previous bracket...you wont see them when i put my finishing panel over. do i care if it took me 3 minutes to make them? no. better than zip ties, which I have yet to use one yet

ampz 03-22-2008 05:26 PM

Looking good.

I used a Hyundai Accent X3 SOHC lower radiator hose on mine, the bends worked out sweet and clear the charge pipe by about an inch.

Just a thought if you need to replace the concertina one :)

I use zip ties when holding things temporarily to fab up a bracket, etc. I think I have used two bags of zipties on the car all together. :eek5:

i suck, cant get it running. dont have my old megasquirt map so that makes it difficult, idles fora bout 15 seconds on 2 cylinders, so i guess that's an accomplishment...it's getting there, and then driven straight to a muffler shop.

Trent 03-22-2008 06:19 PM

i don't know without looking at it, but does the coilpack ground through the bracket? You might want to attach by at least the top two bolts.

Saml01 03-22-2008 07:24 PM

Hey Scott,

Did you wet sand the intercooler before spraying it?

I bought some flat acrylic paint and it says to sand prior to use.

rappadan 03-22-2008 07:33 PM

so it all went well after i left? No leaks?

Joe Perez 03-22-2008 07:45 PM

On a 1.6, the coilpack doesn't ground at all. There are three wires on the coilpack connector- one brings +12 into the (+) side of each coil, the other two are the individual (-) sides of the two coils going out to the active-low drivers on the ignitor, which is a separate unit mounted on the cold side of the engine compartment.

Good to know. I haven't really dug into the ignition system on the miata yet. hell, i think that's the one thing I HAVEN'T messed with at this point. lol.

elesjuan 03-23-2008 01:37 AM

Why not put your COPs on?

y8s 03-23-2008 09:54 AM

yeah maybe not having COPs is confusing your squirt.

Braineack 03-23-2008 10:38 AM

well, you can see I was trying both the COPs and stock coilpack. I just need to get my old map loaded and double check all my connections. I had the MS running the motor before i swapped them. So now I changed motors and injectors and didn't have my old map...It might be something stupid like i need new spark plugs, I may have forgot to push in an injector clip. I dunno.

scotch-brite padded it.

nope, other than it not running, no issues. ;)

Saml01 03-23-2008 06:32 PM

Hey Scott.
Two questions.

1. What is the Length and I.D. of the flex radiator hose you used?

2. How did you get your turbo on without notching your frame? Kinda hard to tell but your turbo isnt clocked straight down, is it? I cant get my turbo on without notching it seems :( unless you know a trick.

92MX5 03-23-2008 06:38 PM

Dwell setting? Didn't you lower your dwell to 2.5ms for the COP setup, vs stock? Shot in the dark...

Cheers!

Jeff

it would still run if the dwell were wrong... just not in boost so well.

Ben 03-24-2008 08:05 AM

Actually my factory coils seems to work better at 2.5ms dwell than it did at 5.0 ms dwell. I got about 12 psi out of them before blow out with new plugs at stock gap (.044"?). :dunno:

m2cupcar 03-24-2008 09:15 AM

see my last build thread for info on radiator hose, it's the same one FM provides with their kits. NAPA part.

I don't rock no puny t25, I didn't need to notch the shelf.

nope, however it think it has something to do with timing or fuel. I had to pull the CAS to put this engine back in so it could be too far off. I also have no tach so I may have forget a connector or two.

It looks like your manifold is smaller, probably because you have a 1.6.

As for the hose, well, the pics are down. So if you have that information somewhere, id appreciate it.
