Default Turbo pickens out time, take 2

~1.9L, forged guts
7500 max rpm
stock 99 head
T3 manifold
tial 38mm EWG
downpipe swaged to 3" at exit
3" cat and exhaust

Image attached is TrackDog (2.0, headwork, and some sort of T3/T4 at 12psi). I want this type of powerband, but I'll run a tad more boost, and have boost rise with rpm to keep the torque up. Looking for closer to 400hp.

Looking for something Garret or equivalent. Not Chinese. New or used. Probably not ball bearing.

Ben,

If I had the extra displacement like you, I'd definitely used a T3/T04E 50trim for your goals. If you look at elminator's dynos he made in excess of 500rwhp with a stage 3 turbine at 22-23psi IIRC. From what I remember before he upgraded the turbine, he made somewhere in the ballpark of 400rwhp with a smaller 0.64A/R turbine at lower psi. Rogue has them for brand new around $500.

Both on pump gas.

Here's arkmage's dyno at 12psi on a stock 1.8 with a 2.25" exhaust:

Here's eliminator's dyno on a 95 with a worked head at 28psi, but he said it made 350 at 13-14psi:

T3/T04e
compressor: 50 trim 60AR
turbine: Stage 3 63 AR
360 thrust for higher rpm/boost

I think that's a good balance- the 50 trim will help with earlier boost onset and quicker spool and the Stage 3 will give the flow needed up high in the rpm. I just bought this from TunerToys sans-turbine. But I'll run the 48AR turbine until I have time to rework the dp. Prices on NEW non-bling garret stuff is just a bit more than the used turbonetics stuff showing up on eBay.

that was fast. ben, remember there's lots of trims for the TO4E. Just go look at the maps and run your pressure ratios through them and see which one looks nicest. or get scott to overlay them all on one chart for you.

That is the exact turbo I have. I think it will be perfect for your build Ben. My stock bottom end would be better with a .48 a/r turbine I think, but your built 1.9 will do just fine with the .63 a/r.

I think you're right. Is your's together? spool results?

.48AR turbines are fairly prevalent used, so if you order with a .63 you can pick up a spare .48 cheap. Nearly all the OE t3 turbines are stage 1 and can be overbored. That's what I have - OE Mercedes overbored. It will eventually be available. That's the nice thing about changing the AR for tweaking boost - it's a relatively easy process.

Not together yet. Motor should be in the car in about 2 weeks and turbo to follow a few weeks later. I think it will hit full boost around 4000-4200 rpms with the .63 and would do it about 500 rpms sooner with the .48 by my estimations.

I'm pricing the to4e out. The turbine options are
- 76 trim T31 turbine wheel (stage 3)
- 76 trim T350 turbine wheel (stage 5)
- P trim Turbine wheel

Comments?

Stage 3 - that'll keep it from taking too long to spool and still have lots of head room for top end power. The others are just too big for a DD Miata IMO. Are you doing a 48 or 63 AR turbine housing?

yeah for 400rwhp, you're going to at least need a stage III. might as well go .63 to make it all that easier and with that goal and displacement, no reason to go smaller.

Yeah .63 turbine with the 50 trim compressor. All the web reading I've done indicates that it's a kick *** turbo for my application. The 1.8 Audi guys seem to love it at 18-20 psi.

If you are at all considering a .63 turbine housing, please look at the Holset HY35 (or the newer HE35). It doesn't have wheels from the 80's and you can find them for 300 (I paid 350). It's the stock turbo on the automatic Cummins deisel trucks, the manuals have hx35's which have slightly bigger turbine housings.

I run the HY35 on a 1.8l Honda motor. When using E85 I max out 4 1000cc injectors w/ an OEM fpr and a low pressure pump around 25lb of boost. I hit the boost threshold around 3k and find 24lb around 5k.

It has a standard t3 flange, with a unique exit. I'm not sure if all HY are, but most of the newer ones are vband out. Take the housing to someone with an oven and have a turndown welded on for a couple of bucks, then just use a standard exhaust flange.

This is the best and cheapest turbo you can get. If you are going .63, midez well go 57 trim. And this is that turbo, except it's more efficient.

If you want compressor maps, the easiest/fastest way is to email Holset themselves. The engineers are extremely friendly.
