Turbo Plans and Price List
Hi all, I've been putting together my plans for boosting my 1990 Miata. All of my information has been gathered from this forum (much thanks to Braineack's excellent diy faq), and Corky's book, Maximum Boost. My goals are to have a car that can be comfortably daily driven, so I'd like to make around 200 hp. I put together a price sheet to track what I'll need, and I hope I've been pretty realistic. I went overboard on a few things, such as injectors, in case I want to make more horsepower later on. I also know I'll need a Torsen, and that'll just be predicated on when a good deal comes up on Craigslist or on a forum. Stage one of my build is just to learn to tune. Install MS and drive around with it long enough to get comfortable with using TunerStudio to accomplish my goals. The parts listed in that section (intake piping and whatnot) are specifically to replace my AFM while still being able to use my Jackson Racing intake. After I feel good using MS, it's on to stage two, where the fun really happens.
My goal is to be economically wise without cheaping out on anything important. Obviously there are going to be incidentals (cables, hoses, etc), that I don't have listed, that'll probably add another few hundred dollars to the total. If anybody sees a part on my list that should be replaced with an alternative, please feel free to chime in. I appreciate all the info that's available here, and I want to do this right the first time. Thanks, Dan http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g1...h.png~original |
You'll want EGT.
FM stage 1 clutch is cheaper and probably better, more than enough for a T25 build. I would get at least RX8 injectors. The RX7's are old and their spray hurts mpg. You can save a lot on the blow off valve going with a 25$ bosch unit. Should also be enough for a T25. You forgot plugs, turbo flanges, water lines, air intake filter (unless you already took that into consideration) Here's a link to my excel table https://www.dropbox.com/s/r9kfauuy42...0ver.xlsx?dl=0 |
EV1 RX7 injectors have no business on any new miata projects.
Get these instead: http://www.flowforceinjectors.com/pr...ctor-kit-miata |

Glad to help.
Your plan is responsible and thoughtful. Stick to it. Keep in mind my excel is for a 01+ miata, but mostly all should fit. |
Shouldn't he just go with a FM manifold and DP for $749?
|
Only if he wants it to arrive on time and fit properly.
|
This is insane, so it seems the lifespan of a turbo build lasts about the average career of an NFL player.
I swear that compared to other forums, this is the one for each part out, I am getting out of the game thread..., another one is opened with hey my turbo build. Keep em coming. |

Thanks for the reply, after looking into it I'll definitely upgrade to RX8 yellow-top injectors. Your excel table is a big help.

RX8 are good for a total budget build. But doing a diy set of gt500's is better.
Also you don't need EGT, ignore that guy. |
Would you say that after he blows up his engine trying to lean out cruise afr for mpg?

Ign timing is irrelevant btw |
I dunno. If I were building a 1.6 I'd probably just wait for someone parting out a 1.6 turbo kit and snatch it up for cheapsies. Just my opinion.

I think you can build it for that much but you are going to really need to be on the forums a lot and grab up stuff quick. I was able to come in at $2553.45 including a coolant reroute, Inconel hardware and MSPNP. It took me about a year of collecting parts and reading on MT to get there. I also went with RX-7 460cc injectors. They are not very efficient but there is a lot of documented data on them and they were easy to get idle correct while still maintaining about 80% duty cycle at 11psi. I am content with them but if I could do it again I would look for some ID1000s for E85. You are going to need a radiator as well. I went cheap on the Ebay unit and it works well for my application (autocross car that I put maybe 2k miles on a year). With the coolant reroute, stock fan, and the larger aluminum radiator I hover around 190* even under heavy mountain driving (I live very close to Deal's Gap). Good luck on your build, you're on your way to a fun and dependable system but you may have to overshoot that budget a bit.
The image is just a small snip of a much larger spreadsheet I've kept on the car over the past 3 years. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1462113618 |

This is Curly's old kit, an early ARTech manifold/DP with an SR20 turbo he rebuilt and added TSE studs and locking hardware. Honestly if you buy from members on the board they are likely to have a decent kit as everyone keeps people in check on what works and what doesn't. Used items will have some issues though. I had to get the T2 flange milled and make a few more relief cuts in the manifold. I also picked up a better oil drain fitting, one with allen head bolts and an o-ring for ease of maintenance. Here is my build thread if you are interested. I like to follow people starting new builds but rarely do I see them stick to a small budget and half never finish their build before they sell it all off. |

aidandj pointed you in the right direction. I did pretty much exactly what you have planned. Installed wideband (LC-2) and Megasquirt (DIYPNP, I would really recommend MS3 if you can budget it) and learned the system. Read a bunch of threads, took logs, learned MegaLogViewer, and then installed a vTPS in the car. Started to tune fuel enrichment, messed with the VE table a bit for idle, got comfortable with some of the hiccups you will inevitably have, used VEAL. Enjoyed the new higher rev limit and mid-range torque bump just the base timing map gave. Raced the car like this for about a year while checking the forums everyday for a deal to pop up.

Piping + wideband + boost gauge is more like 300. Extra shit (including bov) will be more like 400-500 by the time all is said and done and you buy gaskets, hoses, etc. So now you're at like $4k. |

As for other sites your local Craigslist will be a good resource and whatever local Facebook groups you may have that are centered around car parts/miatas. I am in about 5 or 6 different groups locally and that is how I got decent deals on things like IC pipe and my front mount. |
