Default EMU won't let my engine run, Ideas

Hi I'll start out by saying that I bought a E-Manage Ultimate unit 3 years ago and put together my wiring harness and found that I could use my laptop to communicate with my unit, and eventually got an old XP laptop from a friend that was full of viruses. Needless to say these hurtals killed my enthusiasm to get my EMU onto the car.

Recently I've been trying to get it up and running after clearing the laptop and reloading XP onto it I was able to get it to communicate with the EMU and tried to start the car up with it and it fired up, but after firing up it will stall right after it starts unless I pump the throttle and then it will run but if I hold the throttle in one spot it will just stall, and it won't rev past about 3,000 rpm.

I tried to spray some brake cleaner in the intake after starting it and it seemed to run a little better but it was hard to say for sure. After that I tried disconnecting the injector connectors thinking that one of the drivers might not be firing the injectors correctly. I found that it ran a little worse when I disconnect one-three injectors but it would still run about the same with 1-3 injectors disconnected.

My Car is a 1996 which appears to be about the least discussed models for the initial set up, currently I have my jumpers setup the same as most of the installations that I have seen the only notable exceptions I can think of are
JP-8 Ignition Output signal the 93-94 seems to use 5v but no one has confirmed if the 94-97 uses either the 5v or the 12v like the NB's. I set mine to both and it didn't seem to make any difference and now I have it set to 12v or 2-3 jumper setting.
JP-13 I just set to 1-2 and the wire is tapped into the Water Temp line
JP-14 Is also set to 1-2 and the wire is tapped into the Intake Air Temp line

Also I didn't connect the cam or crank angle sensor wires since the EMU is supposed to be able to just use the RPM signal to work. but the default parameter settings still have the crank angle sensor listed.

I'm hoping that some of you might have a idea about what might be keeping me from getting my Emanage Ultimate from running my 1996 Naturally Aspirated Manyata. I really want to be one of the cool kids at the autocrosses that can just stand on the gas and launch with the launch control at my local autocrosses. And making alittle more power would be cool too.
Thanks

U will need the cam and crank sensors connected up to the emb, how can u adjust the timing without them, also make sure your maps are all zero.

As much as I want to hate you for inventing the term "Manyata," I find myself strangely compelled to feel sympathy.

My idea is this: connect the cam and crank sensors to the EMU.

I also kinda hate the made up miata names thing but my friend that co-drove the car with me for a season made it up kinda like a no-home version of the miata name and it makes me laugh so I use when I register the car for an event, but I think that might be the last time I use it in a forum.

On to Serious Bizness.

I soldered the wire connections for the Cam and Crank signal wires but I used the actual crank signal wire and the Cam signal wire that has 4 pulses per rev verse two. That didn't work so since the EMU is set up for the Japanese market and I remembered that the JDM engine I got was supposed to be for a 96 or 97 but I had to reuse the crank sensor bracket from my car since it didn't have one. So I don't think the JDM engines had the crank sensor and it is only supposed to be used for tracking misfires in the OBDII system. So I'm assuming that the 4 pulse per rev SGC signal is supposed to be used for the crank signal and the 2 pulse per rev SGT signal is supposed to be used for the cam signal. Joe can you confirm this?

In the mean time I managed to forget to disconnect the battery before removing the EMU harness and reconnecting to the ECU and the car ran like crap this morning got some codes that indicate I didn't reconnect connector 3 properly. Or at least I'm hoping that is what happened and that I didn't F*** up the ECU.

I just can't help but be reminded of an old Seinfeld episode, in which Kramer and George's dad invent a man-bra.

I have the boomslang harness works great only I don't have any maps to get my car to fire on the bigger injectors. Does anybody have. Any maps that will work.with the new 2.3 version of emanage ultimate???

If the car was running before, and all you've done is change the injectors, then all you have to do is change the injector size compensation variable.

It's been about 8 years since I've touched an EMU, and so I can't recall where this entry is made or what exactly it's called, but the short version is that all you have to do is tell the EMU the ratio by which you have increased the injector size and it will automatically re-scale the injector duration.

Some fine-tuning will then be needed, but no one can supply you with a basemap for that.

Alright thanks. Ya it ran fine with the stock computer and a fmu on stock injectors before I put the emanage in. Just it won't fire now even with the stock Injectors. It will crank and crank just won't fire. As soon as I plug the stock computer back in by itself it fires right up.

Strange, all it needs to start is the maps zeroed out and injectors rescaled, if u have not done that correctly its the unit itself at fault or the wiring, did u reflash the firmware 2.3 yourself.

How do you rescale the injectors? you just change the after in the injector parameters right??

Yes its the before and after parameters, before=stock cc injector size, after is whatever size u are using, I don't think the emu likes anything above 550s.

Well I passed the MAF wire from the harness to the ECU bypassing the EMU and it runs fine now but gives me an error no MAF signal detected. Since i did this, i realized i didn't add the MAF map to my tune so i'll try it the way it was with the map to see if that works and eliminates the error. I also had the ECT and IAT sensors wired up with the jumpers set to open but that resulted in a bunch of erg boost sensor errors and ECT IAT barometric sensor errors. the ECT and IAT temps read correctly while the engine was running but when it was just key on engine off they both read -44 degrees Celcius. So I'm just gonna disconnect the ECT and IAT sensors as well. Launch control is fun. Now back to your conversations.

So one more update I reconnected the MAF wires to the EMU and set jumper 9 to open instead of 1-2 which is for the Mazda Hot Wire MAF and it worked fine. Not sure why that worked but it did. I also disconnected the IAT sensor and left the ECT connected and put the jumper back to open and it works properly now again not really sure why it works fine now and it didn't before. Hopefully this will help some one if they are trying to use a EMU for a 96-97 miata, since it has a few oddities.
