Default Tach Output

Hey guys I am helping a friend with his tacho that isn't working. He has a 97 1.8 with 1zz coils. He is running a haltech sprint 500 and I was wondering if I can connect the ecu tacho output to the tach signal directly? I believe for the setting in the software its a 12v pull if I am not mistaken. Or do I need a tach adapter for the signal one like the MSD 8910?

the 97 gets its tach directly from the ECU.

On my 1997 1.8 the tach output from the ECU is a black/white wire, pin 4L. This matched all the docs I found as well.
