Holy shit. $17k would be about retail for my V6 swap as it currently stands. That's with the built engine, baller turbo, new T5z, etc.

But as they said there, if you do it yourself you can save a ton. I'm just under $10k with it in reality.

All said and done, FM is only charging me $2400 in labor for this project. That is about a full day of labor.
I am in the wrong line of business.

Could you honestly, with a straight face, tell someone that it will cost them $17k for 350whp? FM is upselling her by a factor of 5.

I usually read through the troll threads as there's usually some useful info to come out of them.

This one? Nope. Other than some people's sexual preferences.

$100 per hour times 24 hours! That's a full day's work right?

They did get me for about $650 for a MAF delete pipe, boost gauge, a-pillar pod and install, and 2 hours of tuning.

So... $2400 sounds about right.

I think in the future, i'm never letting another shop touch my car again for anything other than tuning, though.

Thats why you gotta get an estimate first. 300 to do 30 minutes worth of labor is quite a profit at least thats how long it took me to do my boost gauge including moving my stock radio to the bottom slot.

I take it they charge 100 an hr for tunning?

miatamike203 12-05-2012 10:57 PM

I did 350whp for about 10k if you do all the labor and tuning yourself. If you have to pay some some the labor and tune it good luck.

TurboTim 12-06-2012 01:12 AM

FM is not in the wrong here at all. If they can charge that then more power to them! I am jealous :)

18psi 12-06-2012 08:11 AM

No one is blaming FM for charging that. LOL
I for one applaud them for it.

I just laugh at the poor idiot with tons of disposable income that's throwing it away like its going out of style

Also it finances fun stuff like those COT wing mounts that Keith is working on! Keep on charging those old m.net guys.

Dyno time is usually $125-200 an hour depending on where you are at. So 2 hours of dyno time could easily been $300-400 out of that $650. That leave $250-350 for install times. At $100 an hour for labor I could seem them taking 3 hours to do a perfect job. While overall for us it sounds expensive, for good quality work it may be worth it.

Braineack 12-06-2012 09:16 AM

I heard your mom charges $26.50

I think it was $189/hr. Wish i could say i got my money's worth, but the car runs worse than it did before.

It was $189/hr.

They did the gauge install in 20 minutes, and i wouldn't call it a perfect job. The pod doesn't sit against the pillar correctly, 2 of the pushpin holes were drilled too large so they constantly fall out.

I bought a new pair of A-pillars and i'll be moving the gauge under the radio myself and taking a whole 45 minutes to do a perfect job.

As for the tune, the car is barely drivable.

I love the guys there to death, they're all great people, but like i said, i've never been big on paying a shop to actually do work, and this reminded me why. It rare that i can find a place that can do better work that i can without charging obscene amounts of money. Will i buy parts from FM in the future? Probably. :)
