does the late model tray help support the mains?

AFAIK this is correct. The pan height change is miniscule (we're talking the thickness of the windage tray, so ~.040" or so), not nearly enough to require a change to the dipstick. AFAIK the only unique dipstick is from the 99 CA-spec cars, which got a different dipstick and matching tube.
Why is the CA one different, anyway? Is it just so that the tube can clear the pre-cat? I wonder why they didn't just put that tube on all the cars?

hmm, I apologize for the misdirection. I remembered this wrong.
As revealed above, the models with significant differences in stick are 94-97 BPE8 to 99-05 BP4W.
And of course California, who always want to be different.
