My money is on the R&D guys melting a standard dipstick during testing, going "Oh, ****", and putting together the metal one very quickly.

hmm, I apologize for the misdirection. I remembered this wrong.

As revealed above, the models with significant differences in stick are 94-97 BPE8 to 99-05 BP4W.

And of course California, who always want to be different.

The California dip stick is discontinued anyway. You can still get the tube though.
