I think he does you a harness and everything contact him.

No kidding? That's awesome! thanks a lot man!

You're going to need a biger boat. Trust me, I know a few things about Miatas and drifting.

weezerfan5487 Oct 4, 2010 08:09 AM

Oh? Could you elaborate a little more doppelganger? Any Advice is great!

i'm looking at getting the begi-s kit, MSPNP(with IAT sensor, boost control, and fan control), 460cc RX-7 injectors, Ebay intercooler kit, HKS SSQV BOV, a custom 3" turbo back exhaust w/ only a cat, LC-1 Wideband, and all the odds and ends(like flywheel, clutch, etc.)

My goal with the car is to make it a competitve drift car. it's already got full suspension(coilovers, bushings, tie rods, end links), good rims(axis oldskool sakura 15x8), gutted, and my year of drifting experience.

i'm in no hurry on this project and money's not really a problem. i'm not looking for lots of power just enough to keep my drift going with no problem. my goal is around 210-220 whp. i see those numbers as more than enough to keep it going. if you guys think this is a good layout for my goal or if i dorked up anywhere i'm more than open to any suggestions. thanks!

Well, what turbo are you going to run? What suspension do you have?
Honestly, your parts isn't isn't bad, but I think you need to aim a little higher on HP to bring up TQ...it's not about peak power numbers...and this is where getting the right turbo will either make you happy or hate the car and make you come back bitching and complaining that you're getting a 240gayx. Same goes with suspension. I'd also recommend getting a 3.9 rear gear. Don't forget the modified knuckles.

weezerfan5487 Oct 4, 2010 08:40 AM

I have Tein Flex, FM butterfly Brace and Door bars, Haven't set on a turbo yet but for the power i'm looking at wanting the GT2556 out of the Begi-S kit fits well. And I'd NEVER get a 240sx. Those damn things are everywhere. I've always been the guy who bought the underdog. lol I've heard about the 3.9 gears. Where would I go about acquiring one? Also I've heard guys talk about modifying the knuckles. Why would I want to do this? I'm just an amateur drifter. I'm not looking to become a D-1 drifter. Just to go to event's like I do and have more power to slide.

Modified knuckles allow you to get much more angle and control the car much better. Even though the Miata can make tight turns, it's steering angle is moderate at best..which is fine for RR and autoX. But when it comes to drifting, the "lack" of angle causes you to pick up speed VERY quickly. Which is fine if you need to, but most of the times it's a problem. You see, a low(er) andgle drift requires MUCH more power to maintin proper wheel speed/wheel spin. Even at full-lock in a Miata, you're going to pick up speed rather quickly. Having more angle allows you to adjust your forward speed...more angle slows down/retains forward speed, less angle increases forward speed. Less power is required to hold high angles whereas low angles eat up tons of power. Couple that with a short wheel-base and it makes things difficult.

The 3.9 gears will add more mph range to each gear. The 4.1 is a bit short once you have real power and you'll find yourself on the limiter or wanting more revvs a lot of the time (how much of the time are you wishing 2nd gear had a bit more to it?). You can get the gears directly from Mazda or from a 1999-2003 6spd Miata.

I'm fine really with the speeds that the 4.10 rear give me for right now. I'll def. look into the modified knuckles once i get the hang of the car after the turbo kit is on. Thanks a lot man. This is some great advice!

lol @ 40mph drifts...
you will be bored of those after half of your first event.

But really, i am setting my car up to slide as well and 200whp was not enough. you should aim a little higher... you really want 3-400hp but thats definately beyond what the stock engine will take.

Get a 2860RS turbo (with 0.64 housing if your worried about spool) and you will be happy. i had this turbo with the 0.86 housing on my 1.6 and it was amazing for a stock engine.

Check out my build thread for pictures of modified knuckle action.

Doppelgänger Oct 4, 2010 01:44 PM

I can get plenty of wheelspin in 3rd (6spd + 3.9) but I can't keep forward speed down/can't tighten my radius due to the stock knuckles. I don't do a lot of drifting anymore (did a TON with my 96 and my 99), but I've had some fun with my 02 enough to know.

shlammed Oct 4, 2010 05:33 PM

wheelspin is different than sliding. and street surfaces are different than track surfaces.
i dont doubt you can get it with your car either... but the tracks here are big and you need to be able to stretch your legs out all the way to redline to connect the corners.

If you had a small turbo and 200hp, you wouldnt be able to do it.

weezerfan5487 Oct 4, 2010 05:45 PM

The tracks out here aren't big actually. their typically P-1 Go-Kart Tracks we get to use for drifting so their small. I've been drifting for a minute and from my personal experience 40mph drifts are just what I'm looking at. If I ever want to get more serious then I'll begin to upgrade and go a little more power. But for right now and from my personal experience it's best to progress slowly and getting the feel of upgraded power before going with high power numbers. 230 whp is over 100% jump in power vs what I'm messing with now.

Doppelgänger is right get some kuckles, they are dope, and would help a lot! go to roadster drift Chelsea sell em. But honestly just go out and drive, and then upgrade as you find it necessary, stock miata will teach you a lot.

I love go cart tracks: so much fun, car w/ coilovers, wheels otherwise stock.

Mines pretty much stock as far as power goes. Minus full exhust, timing, and CAI. I'm used to the lack of power and I make up for it by using skill over brute power.

how does the SSQV sound now that you've snipped the fins out? ive been debating either doing that or replacing it with something else. i'd hate to cut it and have it sound like ass/more annoying, and then not even be able to sell it...

weezerfan5487 Oct 4, 2010 07:19 PM

Hey jbrown. Have I ever met you before? I see your from Tucson. Do you know Mike or Sam with the white NA's? Mike's got the supercharged one.

PM'd you broski.
Hit me up.

TURNS101 Oct 4, 2010 08:12 PM

Oh PS-
If you speak well and do a solid build, dont talk like a dip shit, dont think drift is faster than grip, and search before you ask, you can get along here ;)

You can take it apart and remove the whistler and see. I was just being lazy and snipped it and got pissed at hearing Barney the purple dinosaurs mom queef everytime i shifted. It is real quiet. Actually it isn't really noticable until you get to about 10 psi. Even then its just a quiet whoosh.
