Default Found a 03 1.8 for 750 is that a good deaal

Ok So a buddy with a 2003 1.8 engine from a miata for 750 with 69k miles. Is this a good deal for a transfer into a 1.6 with a ms diypnp.
Should I jump on this. Any pitfalls I need to know about?

An 03 1.8 engine has a VVT head, so you need a way to control VVT.
Your 1.6 tranny won't bolt up to a 1.8 either.
If your goal is 200whp like in your signature, that 1.8 with your 2554 turbo would easily make 200 whp. I'd say around 9psi of boost?

I have a 97 1.8 trans bolted to my 1.6 now. Is the 01-05 different?

The 1.8 trans bolts up to the 1.6? Really? I thought the bellhousing was different?

Can you hear it run? Also get a compression / leakdown test.

Why bother? Just turn up the boost and run 15psi.

OP - most of your gear will bolt up to the 1.8 including the transmission but there's a bit more involved in the transplant. You will need a new exhaust manifold for starters. The VVT controller is necessary which really means you need to get a real computer to run everything. $750 for a motor isn't a steal but I've heard of worse. FM sells a kit for 1.6 -> 1.8 conversions so take a look at that parts list...

That price is decent for a known-good VVT engine. I got my complete 01 motor for $400 but it came from a car that took a front end hit and had a few cracked or bent accessory parts, though no apparent damage to the important stuff (block, head, VVT parts). I couldn't see it run, but it only had 35K miles on it and turned over fine by hand. The price was low enough to take a shot, and drive 4+ hours each way to get it.

If you cruise craigslist long enough you'll see VVT motors listed from about $700 on the low side up to about $1200 if the seller doesn't mind keeping it as a garage ornament.

OK. So the MS2 DIYpnp with the vvt contoler will control this thing right?

Some on mentioned a real computer. I assume a ms2 is what they are talking about right.

I have purchased a ms diypnp the other day/. And in order for no one to grab the deal of craigslist before me I mis listed the price. I paid 400 for the engine. Looks fine and it spun smooth other than the compression parts. has a clutch and cop attached as well as purple injectors. maybe they will be worth something to some one and I can make up some of the price or use the cop things myself some how.
