It would be an awesome engine, but I think its different from the typical K24/K20 in that the intake/exhaust is swapped. Of course, this would eliminate the need for the header going under the engine. Not sure if the bolt-pattern changes to the transmission, but I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to change that. Given the price, however, its probably on par with an LS swap in terms of cost to use this engine currently.

The whole point of a k swap is an NA motor that makes good power. Just throw some pistons in your 1.8 and make 306hp with a turbo, and save about 15k.

A 1.8 setup like you described could make similar power, but wouldn't touch the reliability of a completely stock Honda engine. These engines are dynoing at almost 300whp right out of the box with no tuning, on pump gas. That's pretty impressive.

I spent a while looking at this engine at SEMA. It seems to be a K series in name only, and shares little resemblance to the older engines. The most notable is the intake and exhaust are on the opposite sides of the older Ks (same as the Miata though). The weird oil pan with the oil filter port integrated into it could definitely make steering rack clearance a challenge, but I wouldn't know for sure until I pulled the pan off one.

Long story short, when I can get my hands on one of these for cheap I'll pick one up and take it apart. I hear the Accord is getting the exact same engine, so those should be dime a dozen pretty soon. Pair it up with a BMW trans and it would be hard to argue with that combo of cheap/fast/reliable.

or throw a turbo onto the "old" K and make twice that. lol

I don't know if Honda really thinks people will lust after this new crate engine (and maybe the weird Honda boys will), but it's not impressing me at all. The old K imho has way more potential

IF these motors are reliable. They should be, with Honda's track record. But I'm not making any assumptions just yet. They still haven't figured out how to make a transmission that doesn't grind, from the early reviews of the type R

Yes...all new engine/architecture. Designed from the get-go to be a turbo engine.

Accord 2.0T engine is basically a de-tuned type-r motor (mostly in the head/turbo) and for the aftermarket I will would think the accord motor will be the better choice. The type-r tax is not going to be worth the cost difference. As you mentioned, the accord motors will be readily available from wrecked cars in a years time.

TSX K24 with just about any turbo bolted on the side can make 305whp...so old K24s still make the most sense especially since there's already mount kits...

Might be worth it if it came with a 1.6 option to rev faster.

There are significant differences between the two:

Cams, pistons, rods, intake valves, turbo, intercooler, oil pump & pan.

Probably better and cheaper to get a standard junkyard K engine and build it.

remember when we used to lust over crate motors with more than 4 pistons...

There are way more changes than just those. Stronger crankshaft, intake manifold, injectors, and fuel pump too. For all intents and purposes, the only common component is the block. Then there is the entire electrical system: The Type-R has a complete Bosch setup (ECU, sensors, all the controls software, and calibrations by ze Germans), while the Accord uses a Keihin ECU with standard Honda sensors, controls software, and was calibrated by Honda engineers.
