A dyno is just a tool. Comparing results from one to another and from one car to another is an excercise in futility. Most dynos can be manipulated. Not a single one is any sort of "standard".

If it has decent compression and leakdown, then it doesnt matter much. Its all you get.

I'd say only part of it.

Either way, we agree that it won't make all of it.

I am trying to understand the older comments made by 949 about building a motor.. "healthy VVT motor with headers, intake and exhaust should be around 140 and with square top and with BP5A can hit 150-160".

These references if taken seriously are referenced to Dynojet, Dynapack or Mustang?

They typically use a Dynojet, but it doesn't really matter. If the motor is healthy, it's going to make what it's going to make.

I thank you for this candid answer and completely understand the healthy engine part. I was curious more on what expectations one should have a range of - it's good, it's fast or a "wow"it's awesome power.

When we say race motor - what does a spec miata brand new build from a top builder and properly tuned should deliver ?

Those are Dynojet numbers. Dynojet has become the standard for classification and whatnot. The numbers are scientifically inaccurate, but the dynos are pretty consistent.

Thank you for confirming the "dynojet" reference. So a good comparison to mustang would be 10-11% lower from those referenced DJ numbers?

In general, a Mustang will read lower than a Dynojet, but as everyone has said, you can make the numbers read whatever you want.

So someone can manipulate the numbers. I am now suspect about my dyno. i left to get lunch and came back and final results were shown to me. That sounds suspect.

Step 1: Check compression/health of motor
Step 2: Dyno and tune.
Step 3: Don't worry about numbers from other dyno numbers posted
Step 4: Enjoy.

LMAO yeah. Everyone's car makes 1000 on the Dyno.

If you hit 125, be happy.

That's what I wanted to hear. Be happy with 125 on a mustang and anything more is good.

tell you what, when you do that 3rd gear log for me, do it on a flat level road exactly how I instructed you. I'll run the numbers and send you a VD plot that should actually be very close to a dynojet.
