Bingo. I doubt that running ATF in the motor would help just because you obviously have some compression, which tells me that at least one of the rings (probably the top compression ring) is sealing. If I were you, I would pull the motor and just pull that piston/rod out to inspect. Un-crust the rings and plop it back in. I started cleaning off my b6t pistons the other night and I was fucking ASTOUNDED at how bad the second ring and the oil control rings were. No amount of ATF soaking would fix that had I just thrown them into a motor. I had to pry them out with a dental pick.

Well at this point there is no way i'm going to put this thing back together with the rings that are in it. I'm just hoping it isn't ringlands and hoping I wont need a hone or anything once I have it all apart again.

Not exactly what I suspected, but pretty close. Piston rings from #3.

So wait... It was broken to begin with, or I was right and it was super stuck?

It was broken to begin with. Came out in those pieces. Looks like that is the only thing that went wrong though.

Jeff_Ciesielski 06-15-2010 07:51 PM

Sort of strange to have a shattered ring....

Definitely the first time i've seen it.

= profit?

Well thats what I thought.

Just got in from the garage after trying to put the new rings on. Look what came off the piston. Can I just run it without this piece in there?

I have 3 good stock pistons from a B6 motor.

Holy crap that thing must of ran HOT. Replace all four if you can. Used stickers should be cheap.

wayne_curr 06-21-2010 05:34 PM

I should also mention that there is a groove in the cylinder wall of number 3 that I didn't notice before. I can catch a fingernail on it so i'm just throwing in the towel on this block which sucks because I spent hours cleaning and painting it :(

bbundy who sold me this might have a long block I can pick up from him. If not there is a long block 2 hours away that i'm considering, just tough for me to drive down and get it. I'm starting to get really frustrated with all of my car problems.

Another thing to note that bob pointed out is that 323 GTX intake manifolds seem to feed air a lot better to cylinder 3 than the rest. He has a GTX with a dead cylinder number 3 right now as well. Seems to be a common problem.

falcon 06-22-2010 11:13 PM

If you can wait until my build is done in about a month you can have my current block for free.

I also know where you can get some BRAND new std size pistons and new rods for $300. Pulled out of a crate engine and never used.

I just cant wait that long. This is my daily driver (or its suppose to be) so i've got to get this back on the road asap. Especially since there is an autox in 2 weeks.

I wish you luck!

My engine is being bored out next week. Still up for doing assembly for me?

Absolutely. Hopefully I can get my car reassembled and out of the garage in time to work on your stuff =P

When do you want to come pick up some parts? I will be at Packwood this weekend.

My car is not quite legal for Nationals in SSM it is only legal under NW-region supplemental to run in SSM. Id have to run XP at nationals. My car is more of a street driven track car that I take to autocrosses than an autocross car. Id get my arse kicked I think if anybody showed up for XP. I may try and bum a co-driver ride in somebody’s car that is actually prepared to the rules in some class. E-stock even is actually quite fun.

Bob

falcon 06-24-2010 01:14 PM

I think your only comp in XP is Keith Brown... The rest of the XP cars are all stripped out 2nd gen Hondas.... lol

At least that's what It's been for the last few years.

Kieth is in DP. Ron Bauer and Jim Danials have also converted there old CSP car to DP. I think Kieth is faster though he is getting 170+ rwhp out of a naturally asperated 1.6l spinning it to 9000 rpm and weighs 800 lbs less than me and can drive. Locally there is much less competition for me in XP which is like DP with turbos and big motor swaps than even SSM, but I dont know who shows up for national tour, I have never been.

Bob

Thanks for the pistons, Bob. I hope the thieves that stole them out of my car last night will get as much use out of them as I would have.

Andifer 06-28-2010 05:14 PM

fucked up...

I happen to be more prone to being ripped off than most people. I have atleast 2 expensive items stolen from me each year. Everything from my gas getting siphoned to my house being robbed. I've never stolen anything in my life so i'm not sure what i've done to get this karma.

ya its a good illustration of the compression differences between a GTX and a miata. Miatas have 9.5:1 compression, right?

curly 07-02-2010 07:09 PM

I was more referring to #3 and #4 being at TDC at the same time. No wire wheel love for them?

Oh haha. Ya, I reworked the crank, I think it'll work better this way ;)

I'm putting a bunch of used parts together on the cheap. The only thing I cleaned on those pistons was the ringlands. I see no point to cleaning the top, they'll be dirty again instantly when I start the engine.

levnubhin 07-02-2010 09:09 PM

Explain "reworking the crank" please.

Cut crank in four pieces, reweld so 3&4 and 1&2 fire together. He's calling it the "Harley Miatavidson"

falcon 07-03-2010 01:03 AM

crossplane crank? Like the new R1?... lol

fooger03 07-03-2010 11:42 AM

i was looking at those pictures with a WTF face too. what if we made it so that everything was synced parallel though? all 4 pistons at TDC at once! (nevermind the fact that the starter couldn't turn the crank) fire all 4 at once for momentary super power, RAWR!!!

johnmatt 07-05-2010 01:35 PM

WankerWorks crank mod FTW!!!!
