looks cool, i would love to see a before and after dyno though to see exactly what its done to your power band.

 

if I'm going to spend the time sending manifolds to a flowbench, I'm going to just build my own and then sell copies.

 

Are we sure $500 is correct because from what I can see its 3mm walled pipe with 3mm sheet to flatten sides welded to the OEM manifold. Should be $50 in parts plus another $50 for labour then $50 powdercoating.

Not to worried about it if it's worth the money, but I will find out soon enough. When I get around to putting it on (this weekend) I will take pictures, and after I data logg a bit I will post dyno results.

 

If you can replicate that manifold for 150 I will buy one from you right now. Til then the people that make them get to charge whatever they want

 

$50 for labor is like 1/2hr for a good fabricator. I would love to see you fit up, prep the metal, set up your work station, weld, etc anything in 1/2 hr. I bet that took at least 3-4hrs minimum to make. As far as I know Rob at flipside isnt churning these out like a chinese factory so they are all custom one offs. There is going to be premium for that. Plus its great quality, from a great guy.

 

Yeah, really, it's much more expensive than it seems at first. I, too, thought that I could build an intake manifold cheaply. Guess what, it ended up costing me almost $400 in parts and machining costs alone. Add to that the cost of getting it welded (unless you can weld aluminum yourself) and what you value your own time (minimum wage? Definitely not...).

Obviously, from looking at the pic, it's not for a Miata, but its cousin (brother?), a Protege (BP4W head).

I took a lot of ideas for my design from that long intake manifold thread and was planning on getting it flow benched, but the only local shop I could find wanted over $300 for just the setup fee alone.

I figured it was going to be $300-400 in parts (plenum, trumpets, flange and runners since I don't feel like re-using the stock flange because it looks ugly), plus weld costs. And I still wouldn't have a manifold with any flow figures. I don't want flow-bench, a Solidworks drawing would satisfy me. Nobody will produce even that - it's like they just slapped a plenum on and put it on sale without doing any sort of R&D or engineering of any sort.

If that offends you because you make an intake manifold for the Miata, and you actually did R&D and you have flow numbers, I have two suggestions:

1. Advertise better
2. Tell me where I should Paypal you

 

Isn't that plenum too small?

 

Might look small because the tb opening is huge - 75mm (I got an awesome deal on a new 75mm Edelbrock tb). The base is 4" wide and the top is out of a 4" tube. I used a Magnus manifold made for a DSM as my template for the plenum. It ended up right around 2.5 liters, which might be a tad smaller than the Magnus because my plenum has a round top instead of being bent sheet metal. Researching online, I found recommendations from anything between 1-3 times engine displacement for FI. So mine might be on the smaller end, but compared to what I had stock, it's huge.
