Lightbulb Total emissions removal?

Has anyone done a complete emission system removal from their Miata?

I currently run my 7 with absolutely no emissions, no cold start assist or any of that BS that gets in the way of a tidy engine.

I have searched around but have not found anything here about the process, or what can and cannot be thrown out.

If nobody has done it, then I guess I will. I am documenting my rebuild anyway, so I might as well make a DIY of sorts.

Any smog **** can move to Kali. I'm in TN and don't care.

92 Miata, you could probably toss everything. It doesnt return OBD 2 codes and all it has to do is pass a sniff test. So unless you have a visual inspection you need to pass, get rid of everything.

dunno if the stock ECU will throw codes or put you in some kind of limp mode that way, but a megasquirt would fix that problem quick.

that said, I have to breathe your air.

The county I like in doesn't have emissions, but some in PA do. Where I live, it's just a visual, but the guy who inspects my **** doesn't check. I have everything on my car that was factory emissions, except I have no cats. I did get a CEL when I took them off, (simple simulator fix) but then again my car is a 99 and have OBD2. I think as long as you don't have do deal with emissions, take all the **** off. It shouldn't change anything as far as the way your car runs.

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)- like taking a drag from a cigarette and then inhaling the 2nd hand smoke cause the government doesn't want it in the atmosphere.

Forgot to add that, it will be MS'd.

I am just curious as to where the best places will be to pull the boost signal once all the useless vacuum lines are gone. I guess Bell chose the best when the designed the turbo kit, but sometimes that isn't the case.

No emissions test for me!

actually EGR is good and can lower combustion temps and improve gas mileage without hurting power.

Good point. I still have my EGR hooked up on my car. I wonder what would happen to my gas mileage if I blocked it off. I'm not tryin it though just to prove a point, I'm just a bit curious since you said something. I don't see EGR as a power robbing thing..I mean it's not like having a smog pump, which would be something more the engine would have to drive; thus robbing power. I also feel that deleting the cats is an increase due to less restriction...similar to putting a larger diameter exhaust on. As far as EGR, I think removing this wouldn't make a difference, so why do it? Let well enough alone.

IMO, the main reason to delete EGR is because the fittings to adapt it to a turbo manifold are expensive

I'd be interested to see what you do if you go the full delete route..
My reasoning would be to tidy up eng bay/free up some room as well

The '92 doesn't have EGR, so that doesn't apply.

The only 2 items that really constitue "emissions" devices would be the charcoal canister and the cat. I'm not sure if there was such a thing as a 49state car in '92, but if there was, it might not have a charcoal canister. It certainly had a cat.

I suppose a PCV valve might also be "emissions" related, and there are a dozen different ways to go about keeping/deleting it depending on how your particular setup goes.

There are 2 common places to source a boost signal to your ECU. The first is to put a T in the small line that feeds the fuel pressure regulator bolted to the back of the fuel rail. I subscribe to the "shorter vaccum lines are more accurate", so that's what I do.

Additionally, there are 2 small ports on the front of the manifold directly behind the throttle body. One is for your charcoal canister, the other for cruise control. I use one of those for my BOV and cap the other since I have no CC and deleted the charcoal canister.

on my 01, it's just a two bolt flange. that's pretty damn simple.

oh wait, you mean the exhaust. yeah that's different. i sawed the one off my stock mani and welded it on the turbo mani.

Yes, the reason I am deleting all the emissions, cold start assist, whatever is to tidy up the bay and ease access.

Yes, it has been done. on my 90, I removed the charcoal canister, and removed the catalytic converter ... thats about all the emissions there was. Combined with removed PS and AC made for a lot of room in there.

My '92 was originally delivered in either OH or IN (can't remember which offhand) and it has a charcoal canister. It doesn't hurt anything, so it's still there.

I dont see the big deal with the emission controls on a Miata, especially compared to those on an RX7. When I look in my engine bay, I certainly dont see anything overly cluttered like with my old 7 (before I also did a full emissions delete, then sold it because I couldnt make it run worth a ****). I say at most remove the charcoal canister and let it go. Even with MS I wouldnt go without the EGR system or any other system on the car.

New direction.

I just got a 1.8 for nothing! So it is getting swapped in. I am picking it up on Monday, and ordering the FM swap kit today.

I guess that means I will be selling off the BEGi 1.6 kit that is on it now.

This is probably a better direction anyway. This is now going to be my wife's fun car, and the turbo stuff would make it a little hairy for her.

yes, but without the stock ECU grounding that solenoid at the opportune time, how are the gases being purged?

The 1.8 will get boosted eventually, maybe a year from now.

I just need to get this on the road by Deals Gap Rotary Rally in April. Then after the summer I can start to turbo it.......again.

Patience!!

Did I say it was operational? I just said it was there. And the inspector can see that it is there.

Seriously- I don't like the look of "cleaned up" engine bays. I can't say why exactly, they just don't look right to me. Too much empty space and it looks like something is missing I suppose. Like "I know that the engineer who designed this intended for there to be something in that spot- where is it?"
