It's been a while, and the discussion here was probably better meant for my build thread but, oh well. Sadly, I have yet to figure out the issue for the whacky VVT.

Since my last post, quite a bit has happened. I suspected that the spring for the oil pump relief valve was too weak and opening prematurely around ~45psi of oil pressure. So, I pulled the motor back out with the plans to add 1-2 shims from BE to raise the oil pressure. Turns out, when comparing the spring tension of the BE spring and the spring from my OEM VVT oil pump, the BE spring is noticeably weaker. I swapped in my OEM spring and 2 shims. In hindsight, I wish I only put one shim in, but I was making sure I didn't yank the motor out for nothing. Long story short, motor back in and I'm now seeing plenty of OP. The relief appears to open around 72 PSI which tracks with the +6psi per shim BE claims. Maybe it was a bad batch of springs in the OEM pumps BE rebuilds and ships out? Who knows. Mine was bought BNIB from Sixshooter on here and the purchase date was way back in 2019. The BE OP is seemingly working as intended now.

I was excited to re-enable vvt with the hopes it fixed the issue, and NOPE. The crazy VVT angle fluctuations remain. During this time, I also upgraded from my MKTurbo setup to Kraken and a Pulsar GTX2860 gen2. Needless to say, I've been distracted with +40hp for the time being and haven't had the desire to dive back into this lol.

That being said, I am about ready now to dive back into getting this figured out. However, I'm at a loss of where to poke around at next.

Thanks for the elaborate update.

I also bought a fresh oem piston and vvt specific spring to rebuild my BE stage 2 pressure relieve valve but wasn't exactly sure if the BE is using oem parts or something built in house / with different spring rate.
I guess not, thanks for clearing that up. 👍

When I called them to place an order for their shim kit, I asked if I could also order a fresh spring to go with it. They stated they didn't stock them for sale. I'm guessing because they just reuse the OEM spring that comes with the pump that they rebuild to put their BE bits into it. It couldve been the person I was talking to though. I don't doubt you could get one if you really wanted one.
