You should not have opened it up.
Certain otherwise perfectly intact engine internals are known to crumble when exposed to daylight.

You said this engine was free on craigslist. Did the person giving it away say anything about its condition? Just curious.

Bought the entire car for $200 from some drift kid that had bashed a fender in. Stripped the Bilsteins, aftermarket sways, yanked the motor, sold the rest for $600. Won't be too broken up if the head inst salvageable, but it would be a nice bonus.

The stock rods can stretch if it is over revved and that would explain the contact. He probably missed a shift.

Can't tell from that pic, the head gasket is in the way. Depends on how compressed the head is where the piston struck it. If you can machine it back to flat and replace the valves in that cylinder as needed, you can usually save the head.
