Rice vs Ghetto on extractor hood for NB? and other cooling questions
So as most of my build is nearing completion(built motor/GT3071 and supporting mods). I am thinking about cooling. I believe I have the basics covered-ducting so air is forced through the radiator, coolant reroute, proper undertray, oil cooler, distilled water/water wetter or Evans if really baller.
I will be purchasing either the Trackspeed radiator(when available) or maybe springfield dyno-have Koyo 55 right now.
I am trying to decide on whether to hack up my hood with the carbontrix duct or to buy the chaser aero NB hood.
The carbontrix way is cheaper but looks more ghetto and can't be undone and it seems like used Miata hoods are not cheap or easy to find.
The chaser NB hood is a bit ricey for my taste but the ducts look to be farther forward and in a lower pressure area than the NA one. More expensive but I could just swap back to the stock hood.
I wish there were some actual data on this stuff, but so far everyone seems happy with either the existing NA extractor hoods or their carbontrix ducts. Any reason to think the NB chaser hood would be less effective than the carbontrix duct?
My secondary cooling question should you care,(and believe me I know you don't Hustler) is whether a tube and fin intercooler would make a significant difference in cooling efficiency of the radiator(I have an FM bar and plate unit)? I read one thread (by JasonC SBB, I think) about the Trackdog tube and fin radiator seeming to have much better flow through it than a bar and plate design? Does anyone think this would make a significant difference in coolant temps? Tube and fin cores are relatively rare these days-PWR makes them, ARC I can't afford etc. Cheap ebay core?

I don't care.
I can't provide any data to you, but I've taped yarn to my Carbontrix style hood and the yarn points-up, almost straight from 30mph on. It also moves so much heat that I've had to close-up the vent because it makes the car hot as hell on the commute to and from the track.

not saying this will happen to you but i got the springfield radiator and after a week of driving the entire end tank pulled away from the coils. i tried to have it repaired and the radiator shop i took it to said it was one of the worst build rediators he had ever seen.
guess what im saying is be careful.

Hustler,
Did the carbontrix duct lower your coolant temps at the track? Even an estimation would be helpful
Yeah I heard the Springfield dyno radiators had some QC problems and that's why I would prefer to get the trackspeed radiator or maybe some custom ron davis stuff etc. At the rate it is going it won't matter if the trackspeed radiator comes out next year as the miata probably won't be finished before the rain comes here in OR.

Thanks Jason,
I searched and found the thread. I didn't remember that you had posted temps only the pictures.
Now I just have to decide whether to buy a PWR intercooler or look at one of those ebay specials. Buying anything from ebay makes me nervous but it is hard to go wrong with $75 or less compared to $4-500. forget ARC for 1600 it better be gold plated!

I don't jack around with intercoolers after two previous cars that both saw 250* inlet temps, I'd pretty much only buy a Bell intecooler after looking at a 20-minute log from the track.
