cylinder head services?
hey guys i was wondering if you had any recommendations of any reputable shops to have a 99 cylinder head rebuilt and upgraded. i know there’s Corksport but there kind of pricey as well as flying Miata. i was thinking of finding the parts myself and buy them slowly so it wouldn’t be a big amount of money all at once. What parts should i be looking for? i know i would like to get titanium valve retainers, bronze valve guides (any recommendations brand wise?) over sized valves (Supertech the only option?) springs (who makes them?) any other pats im missing?

John Day Custom Engine

He did my work for an awesome price, and this guy has a remarkable reputation around DFW and spec miata. He also does a ton of miata engines, and frequenly does 99-head work.

he usually goes through Gary / TDR. He charged me $1100 to service the head without really porting anything, just cleaning up castings, he rebuild the head using the old parts and new wear parts, bored the block, balanced the crank super low, and assembled everything. He's build a few motors which go through hell on the track twice per month. He's a little eccentric too, which is always a good quality in a machinist.

For the original poster, if you are going to buy some aftermarket retainers and crap for your setup, make sure you arent wasting your money. Like what is the benefit? If its for better rpm control, you would be better off spending your money on springs and leaving the other stuff alone. Im just saying do a good deal of reading up on each modification you plan on doing to make sure it will do what you want it to do and that there isnt something else that could be done cheaper that will do the same thing or better.

i work at kehl tech performance in CT, we have a superflow flow bench and all the fixturing to run miata heads, i just made all the fixtures to do my own head(99 head ,race ported,1mm bigger valves, spings retainers, inner shim, the works) we can do just about anything you want except cnc porting. i dont have any prices right now, but if you tell me what your looking to get done i can get you a price, we are very very resonable
